Im starting this new Landon thread to discuss the Canada Large cents of the Landon Collection...I didnt participate in the legacy 2 auction by Moores and was away for the several months preceding the auction so I wasnt exposed to the build up to the release of the landon Collection. However when I finally got the news and read the CCN articles and the CCF threads I have bought some Landon Large Cents through dealers .... I received my first lot yesterday and have been ogling . I wont be uploading images but I wanted to discuss with the other members about this collection because the ICCS MS 65 RED 1911 I'mlooking at is the most fresh looking large cent ive ever had in my collection. looking at the catalogue it is obvious that the large Cent quality is extremely high and many of these Large Cents have been awarded finest and second finest status by ICCS..So the fact that they are designated Landon on the ICCS flip must register some significance. Are these coins super coins? I would say mine is definitely a cut above anything ive ever owned and ive owned many gem Large cents over my time as a coin Collector....This coin looks like it was pulled from an original roll yesterday..and I understand that before they were submitted to ICCS they were in original dated rolls. I will be getting a lot more of these in the mail soon so any discussion would be appreciated. Edited by Cassidy77 02/27/2015 12:11 pm

Having viewed the auction lots In person yes they were for the most part pretty amazing. Even the lower end AU 55 to MS 64 coins were appealing. In future I think the pedigree will be recognized for its true significance. Remember there are lots of unattributed varieties amongst the various dates that were not on the ICCS flips. There were coins I examined with neat die clashes , die breaks , triple and double punched digits and the like . It is unlikely we will ever see a hoard like this again. The best part of the Landon hoard and by far the most fun was the Tokens part of the sale .

Really wish I could've seen those tokens.. certainly the estimates that were given by the auctioneer were pretty far off... and how you speak so high of them Pac... I think even with out seeing them I wish I had just pulled the trigger on a lot or two...

I purchased 3 large cents and received them yesterday. One of the best coins I have ever seen. Really thinking I should get a couple more.

Remember that if you collectors want some of these Landon cents, most went to a very prominent Quebec firm, send your want lists ! Ag I am having so much fun with the tokens I am about to get turned into a collector if I don't watch it! ! Seriously the tokens are pretty neat even the common ones. Just solid collector stuff in totally original VF-UNC condition. Sent off a bunch to ICCS this week. We also sold about ten or so already!

It's possible .. I think if Pacific includes the receipt showing he bought the tokens from the Landon collection they may ..
I tell you if it's possible I would try and get that in the comments section...

im going through the Canada Large Cents section of the Moore catalogue to determine the numbers and hopefully I will have that info shortly...I talked with one eastern dealer who invested over 1/3 million into the legacy auctions so there are some heavy hitters out there who will control the distribution of these coins..i notice some Landon presales are selling on ebay where the large cent coins wont be available for weeks....i think I will definitley be adding a Landon Large cent collection to my core holding....

When I was at Torex I talked to Brian and he said ICCS will not Designate them Landon unless in Moores unbroken holders. So I will see what happens. I bought the only lot of 1903 ungraded large cents lot #681 and left those in the lot holders so we will see. A lot of the tokens were loose and unsealed . Lot #38 was wonderful all in Landons handwritten pouches !

Some beautiful coins in that collection. I'm just not sure the name justifies over 150%+ trends at times and how collectors that pay that premium will fare down the road. My opinion of course.

I agreed with the coin huntered guy that its probably no smart deal to pay above the Trend price for a coined that it has the Landon write on it when there are a lottof very nice large cent out there for way less cost than the Trend.
I was also there and view all of the lots with my own eye and yes they are very beautifull the special coins but also a lots of them that were grade by ICCS especially the large cents at MS65 there were many I would not say they were only MS64s!
So what happens to the little guy who he thinks this is right and its not most of those Victoria cent they are value 3 times as much different between the 64 and 65. So if for the example you pay the price of Trend $1350 for a MS65 1888 large cent and really its only the MS64 red one it is price at only $400 by the Trend.
Maybe that is not so smart eh?
Like we all the old guys say "buyd the coin and not what is write on the holder" even if what it say is "Landon".

The 3 coins are bought (all MS64) were roughly 35% below the book value.

looking at sold prices on ebay for landon large cents I would say that most if not all are at trends or below....a cursory glance at the numbers released into the market shows me that those collectors who want an MS 65 Large Cent for their collection will now have plenty of opportunities to acquire one......this doesn't necessarily mean the value will decrease because in many years such as 1887 , 1888 and 1901 the number of MS 65s in ICCS pop report showed less than 50 and an increase in approx...17, 30 and 35 pieces respectively for these dates will be easily absorbed at trends prices....its the numbers of MS 66 that will really test the market prices....but even there ..outside of the 1887,88,99,1901,08 and 11... the MS 66 pop has risen by less than 5 per most dates..which is a considerable increase in MS 66 pop..but still it means now some of us can think about getting an MS66 large cent whereas before it was practically impossible.......as far as ICCS grading goes..they usually get accused of undergrading so its refreshing to hear they are finally overgrading!
