The made three "S" mint Kennedy half dollars in 1998.
1998 S clad proof
1998 S Silver Proof
1998 S silver matte proof

The one in the link looks like it might be a
1998 S clad proof.

Um, yeah, you generally need Matte surfaces to call it a Matte Proof.

Does anyone have a good site/article on what matte finish is? It looks almost like a regular half but more... Metallic or something. Thanks!

GR58's image illustrates a Matte surface in the fields as clearly as you'll find. That coin is night and day from a regular Proof, and the ability to see that clear difference is what you're looking to learn.

OK that is what I thought and yes I could tell it wasn't the same as that listing. I was just confused as to why he said matte on it and I even asked the seller and he said Kennedy's head had a matte fi ish. Thanks all!

Yeah, that seller had no clue and people like him make my job very difficult because you were justifiably confused there for a while.

Aye, the coin in the listing is an impaired normal proof. Not matte.

Unreal, $34 dollar with S&H for an impaired clad proof. What are people thinking. have a near perfect silver one in a really sharp looking 1998 Premier proof set. Paid $22 for the whole silver proof set.

And therein lies the problem. The guy was not being dishonest. He just has ZERO clue about coins. Anyone can sell anything on ebay. Which is fine, but that means you have to be aware of what you are doing. Good job on your part for questioning that.

The fools who bid on that get what a fool deserves.
