No, they are not good to use for a collection you care about.

The biggest problem is the glue used to make the folders; to a lesser degree, the cardboard and paper in direct contact with the coins. The chemicals in the glue, cardboard, and paper react with the metal in the coins.

Whitman holders are good for cultivating new collectors. Kids like to fill the modern folders out of circulated rolls. Some lose interest pretty quickly though because it can hurt like heck pressing those coins into the book, they're real "thumb busters." My daughter lost interest pretty quickly for that very reason.

I was in a coin shop a week or two ago, they had circulated silver pieces selling for a bit over melt. Peace, Morgans, Walkers, Franklins, etc. I scooped up a handful for my kid. She was thrilled when I told her she didn't have to be "too" careful with them, these coins were well worn. Kids like to hold, touch, show off their coins, etc. Hey for that matter so do I.

Got a little off topic, sorry.

As noted, the glue in the back of the slots for coins is not go good for coins. The process is to glue an entire sheet of paper, place slotted cardboard on this and presto, you have a folder. Great for kids that put very worn coins in the slots. If they fall out, kids spit on the back of the coin, place in slots and the glue now holds the coin. Also, not good for the coin. Some coins are to big so they must be hammered into the slots and kids use just about anything for that. Also, not good for coins.

As a follow-up ... I used Whitman folders when I started collecting in the 60s. I had coins in them for many years. There was never a noticeable effect on the cents or nickels. I did see a very minor toning effect on the silver dimes, and a very noticeable effect on silver quarters. However, that does not mean the folders are safe for cents and nickels. There is no reason to think the same papers and glues used in the 60s are being used today. You might get lucky, but why risk it.

You may want to check for coin shows in your area. If you can go to one you'll see a multitude of various coins, grades and prices. Also, some flea markets have coin dealers.

fairj, a lot of people recommend buying the best quality coin you can afford for your collection so it sounds like you're right on track there.

As far as places to buy them you might want to do a search on coin dealers in your area too. Check them out and see if you can find a reputable dealer and buddy up with him.
