I don't know how this would grade but I found this part way sticking out of the ground on end back in 97 totally tarnished black (age tarnish like on a set of old silver dinnerware black type of tarnish). But when cleaned up I was surprised that a very good amount of detail was on it almost like it was a lightly circulated coin.

Where I found it was a decommissioned military base that originally opened in 1943 as a USAAC base and didn't close till 1977. Makes me wonder if that had been sitting there in the ground all those years?

This still looks better than some of the Walkers I've seen on the net. I'm still going to try to pick up some hard cases for my franklin and 1964 Kennedy 90% Halves. I will put the Walker in a hard case since I would like to send it off to get graded at some point. After all this is my second ever antique coin found on the ground the second coin I found was a 1916 Mercury dime found near a parking meter.

If it were me, I wouldn't waste the money on sending it in. I would keep it loose and enjoy handling it from time to time. The value of the coin isn't worth a TPG. Nice find though. I never found anything but modern change when I metal detected years ago.

You have to agree though it is not very often one finds a WWII era coin in such great shape when others from the same minting year are in even worse shape wear wise. While this one still retains maybe 80-90% of its original detail. Maybe when I use my metal detector this year in my yard I'll probably find some coins from the 1950's and 1960's since the house I now live in was built in the 50's and was in the same family for 60 years.
