I found this neat error 1994D with a circle around the D mint mark. I kinda like this one but don't collect these errors. What do you think caused this?

I believe that was caused by zinc rot.

It is progressive from split plating-zinc rot and circulation:

The split happens during the strike. Then air get to the zinc and begins to make it raise and deteriorate the zinc core. Then the circulation flattens the zinc rot and flattens. Then the plating falls off when the area is affected around the mint mark. Yours is almost there.

Coop, I've got to say you do have the best pictures. I love learning about coins. I pass on the info to my 5 year old and he's always excited. He's already got his collection started. Thanks again.
