I don't like that it's marked up so much but I assume the packaging will be great like the dime was. I like the original tribute design, it's art. I like that it's .9999 Fine Gold (7.776 grams). I like that everyone seems to be putting it down and returning it since they couldn't successfully flip it on ebay. I like that I could stumble out of a meeting this afternoon and still find it available for purchase from the mint.

Quote: Pass. No interest in this whatsoever. . . . . thankfully I have to agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. I've been trying to find even a single good reason why I'd want to pay nearly $500 for this unappealing coin. I have not found a good reason. On the other and, any time I go to my SDB I don't ever get tired of re-appreciate my gold commemorative coins like this one:

The highest bid on ebay is $590. There are quite a few above the still available release price. Would these be dealers trying to get above their 1 coin? This coin is not appealing to me at $485, but if I can make money at it, but if you consider it an investment and you can make money from it... Any guesses as to where the price will settle? I still think that for the premium over melt, there are a lot of other classic gold coins that are rarer at less of a premium. How much demand is there for this coin? Are people still buying gold Mercuries for over $199? I see bids on ebay for SP-70s around max $245. Rick Tomaska had it on his TV show for $399 last week, I couldn't believe my eyes.

The last two sales were for $585 with free shipping.
Cost from the Mint $490... Ebay/PP fees $76 Shipping insured maybe $12 or a tad more
Total in my book looks like a profit of $7 or less
ASSUMING the price holds at this level and doesn't drop a tad
SO if you can get a dealer to pay you $50 over cost then that would be better

In other news, I just got an e-mail from the mint saying my order has already shipped.

Only because I am taking up a dealer on his offer to pay $50 and cover shipping expenses did I buy one of these. If not for that, I would never buy this coin.

I guess some ebay people aren't aware that you can still buy one directly from the mint. (Which is always the case) ekovich

I could still change my mind, but I will not. I am glad those who have wanted one of these have been able to get them.

I think this series going take some time to gain value and popularity, like the 2009 UHR 1 oz gold.

I purchased. Even at 100K mintage, these are a "one of" coin set in my lifetime. The timing is also of importance, as I have just barely enough to purchase all three of the '16 coin designs in gold.
I DO wish the mint would have made these in CLAD (yes, I said that) and in 90% SILVER too!!

I think a year or two from now all those that didn't buy one of these will wish they had. We shall see.

As a collector I am happy I could buy one with little trouble. It would seem that many would be happy if the buy limit was 10 per household and they sold out in 15 minutes... I would rather a slower "sell out" allowing collectors to have a chance to get one.

Quote: I think a year or two from now all those that didn't buy one of these will wish they had. That will never happen for most who have chose not to buy I believe. First of all, this coin elicits very little excitement by lots of collectors....but especially those who have chosen not to buy it. The only honest people who would pay a penny premium for this coin (raw, unslabbed) over the US Mint price are those who either are in a part of the world where the US Mint doesn't ship to or are fools who can buy this coin direct from the Mint but just don't realize they will be able to for a very long time. There are far better ways to spend my money on coins and medals that are appealing and worth it rather than on this $500 1/4 oz flop of a coin.
