TroyWhite, I agree with you. It is not the charter or responsibility of the mint to create "rare" coins that increase rapidly in value for those who may be lucky or simply prudent enough to buy one or more when offered. Some coins that have had very reasonable production limits have done well and some that either had low production limits or simply low sales have not fared so well. That is the nature of collecting. I like collecting modern numismatic coins as much for the pleasure it gives me as much as for any potential monetary gain. I like the annual commemorative silver dollars because I remember circulating silver dollars as a child. I like the 5oz silver "quarters" because they give the engravers so much canvas to work with. I like most of the anniversary coins because they make an aspect of coin history more affordable than it might otherwise be. Oh, heck, I just like coins.

clairhardesty I can see that we are collectors not flippers and from the moment I read about and saw these Gold 1916 coins I knew I would have to have each of them. And I think there are many who feel this way. That being said it was upsetting that the Mercury dime sold out in like 10 minutes and I think the Mint has done a great job on this one...

The quarter is probably the least interesting to me. I liked the dime and will keep saving for the WL half. Maybe someday I'll try to find a slabbed 70 quarter but right now I don't have the cash.

IMHO - if the household limit would have been 2 or greater, this would have been a sellout.

Now, pause for a moment. We have recent history of what happens when a sellout of a 100K mintage occurs. Initially, price goes high on the raw secondary market, then starts to settle.

Because we have TPG's available, pricing has also began to stabilize for 69 and 70 graded.

Is this the bottom of the pricepoint for the 1/10th oz gold? Maybe.

As we sit now, two days after a NON sellout, household limit of 1, the flippers cannot gain an immediate market share advantage, as the product is still available to the public.

Now, pause one more time.....

From a "collectors" standpoint, 100k mintage, 100 year anniversary of first year coin designs of three HIGHLY sought after coin designs (especially in MINT STATE).......would you want to own one?

Will I make money on my purchase today? No, no I won't. BUT, in my "collector's eye", I am very happy to own two of the three, so far.

To celebrate this, I also purchased a 1926 D SLQ in MS64 today! :)

No, because of the odd sizes which make the seem less real to me.

The 24K Gold composition is the biggest difference... I believe one of the goals in creating these modern tribute/commemorative releases is not to try and reproduce the original.

The size of the 2001 Buffalo Commemorative didn't bother me. It's a little bit larger than the original release but I still like it. I can live with the differences across the 2016 Centennial Gold Coins as well.

edit:
@acloco, Is liberty wearing chain mail in that image?! I'll be disappointed if mine arrives clad in chain mail.

These are almost exactly 90% of "original size" and 120% of original weight. There had to be trade-off making them in 24k gold and 9/10 of original size is as close as they were going to realistically get.

If the mint made this year's anniversary gold coins the same size as the originals, the half dollar would weigh in at 0.75Toz like the 2014 gold Kennedy half dollar and the quarter & dime would be 0.375Toz & 0.15Toz and they would probably cost 50% more than they do.

Just checked ebay. Found 2 sales of the gold SLQ that featured "coin in hand." One even had picture of the coin with a sticky note next to it with the notation of "9/9" on it. Guess someone paid for overnight service. They both want just shy of $800 for it. One was located in Ithaca, NY, and the other in Titusville FL. Haven't heard anyone speak to this, but they both pictured the "piano box" the gold Mercury dime shipped in.

acloco: Where did you get that image showing the three coins? I ask because the quarter in the picture has the chain mail dress design, but the one from the mint has the bare breast design.

From an article in Coin Week - online in March 2016, I believe.

That picture might be photoshopping. The reason I say this, the mint website picture, clearly indicates NO chainmail, correct drapery under arm for a 1916 rendition, and correct length/position of the bottom of the robe for a 1916 rendition as well.

Yes those renderings were produced a while back before the mint had released official images of this series. All they did was take some BU images of the original coins, change the hue of the image to make it look gold, and photoshop on the date. I was relieved when the mint images came out that the date was a more respectable font than that shown on the Coin Week renditions.

Wondering out loud.....

The Mercury dime does not have full bands.

Will any of the SLQ's have a FH designation?

Will any of the Walking Liberty's have a full/complete hand?

We clearly see many do not appreciate the 1916 commemoratives. I love the coins, the look and the premise of the entire idea. I see many do not have any interest in these coins, I believe there are plenty of closet collectors.

I would enjoy seeing those that also enjoy these and their positive comments, Please...... PS, Far to many negative posts, I think this topic deserves better positive input from those that also appreciate this series, Be Well all...........
