I was out cleaning the back of a used trash hauler I purchased at a local municipal auction, and while I was cleaning it out I thought back to the time when I was cleaning out grandma's attic and I looked in the bottom of grandpa's toolbox. The kids were out in the new car we bought and looked in the glove compartment, and then I heard my wife holler, "Hey what's this?" She had found this coin, it was really dark and hard to read, kind of grayish purply blue, so I got out a rag and started to rub it and I used a little toothpaste and that seemed to work to get whatever gunk was on it off of it so I could see it. I took it to a dealer and he offered me $50 and I think I'm going to take it unless you think it would sell for more on ebay or maybe at another dealer's? Here's some pictures of it, maybe I should just donate it to the Salvo or something and take a $100 tax deduction cause that's probably what the dealer thought he could get for it anyway I'm no sucker I'll show him so what do you think?

It's a shame that you harshly cleaned it. I might have considered taking it off of your hands.

I'm not an expert in these, but I don't see anything that would indicate that it's fake. I'm with Bryan, that maybe this is a joke thread or a post from somewhere else(maybe ebay)? I'm pretty sure that halfbust would know what kind of coin that is and wouldn't clean it with toothpaste!

I'll give you $150 for it, but only if you cleaned it with the gel type toothpaste. The paste kind just doesn't do as good a job.

I used Aquafresh, I thought since it was red white and blue and this looked like a true Amer-i-can coin it would work best of all. I'll try your idea when I get to scrubbin it again to get the last of that ol tarnish off it.

What makes it fake? The first thing is it's not certified...which anyone would have taken it to some antique dealer/coin shop to have it looked at. Even the one Benji found in the junk box...he sent that one in to have it authenicated to NGC. I remember Forum mom posting this link and another back around 9/11 but I can't find the post. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/reidg.../page_7.htmlI am leary of these unless it's been tested since they cost so much! But if it's real...a grading she would go, a grading she would go...hi ho a merry-o a grading she would go!

Are you for real? If the coin is real, and that's a big if, you would have taken off about 1/4 to 1/2 it's value with your cleaning of it. And you plan to "scrub" the coin again? Great. Hey, why not just put it in a sandblasting cabinet? THAT will get "the last of that ol tarnish off it."

Nothing about this coin jumps out and screams fake to me (I am definately no expert of the series because of price but this one looks pretty darn good if it is). The reason I asked why you thought it was a fake was maybe we all could have a learning experience out of this thread, but I have to say I don't think the "just because its not in a slab its fake" debate is a clever argument

I don't think "not slabbed" is a clever argument...this coming from me (someone who buys raw 99% of the time!) But as Prethen and I had discussed in the past when I started collecting 19th Century Proofs, you have to wonder why someone had not sent a rare raw coin off to be graded and if it was and still not graded...what's wrong with it? But with the local coin shop offering $50 for it, I think I would keep it too especially for a found coin. I had talked to Benji about working out a deal this bust dollar he found in a junk box, but we agreed for both of our peace of mind...send it to a TPG. So if we are concerned about one in this condition is real or not...why not one as nice as Halfabustisbetter's. I say send it off and find out...but it was a free accessory in a car, so who cares, it is a nice conversation piece and a great story! But of course, this whole thread may be joke as you pointed out earlier, Bryan...gotta give HABIB more credit than that!
