Afternoon, I'm looking to get into the CDN coin and paper collecting, try to pick up from where my grandpa left off. I recently moved to Edmonton, so there's more opportunity to go to shows and meet folks as Ft Mac didn't have much. Between my brother and me, he left US coins and money. We know some of the rarity, but hoping for some more advice/pointers from the experienced folks in the area. I was wondering if there's someone in the Leduc or Edmonton area that would be able to meet up with me to discuss the Charlton books and the local shows/shops. I'm willing to drive to meet whoever, whether it's for coffee or whatever to learn and network. I went to the show yesterday in Edmonton and I was very surprised at how many vendors where there. I didn't want to pick someones brain too much there as their trying to run a business. Thanks in advance. Greg

Greg. There is a meeting of the Edmonton Numismatic Society this Wednesday (March 11) evening at the museum (side door). I'm not a paper collector myself, but several members in the club are VERY into paper money. You're welcome to come & chat with some like-minded people.

Afternoon,
Thank you for the links Kuh.
Scissel,
I may have to check it out, is it at the Royal museum? If not, can you let me know what the address is and when it starts.
Thanks again.

I would stick with the coin shows and coin clubs I have only been to the coin shops in Edmonton on two different trips there but I found 90 per cent of the coin stores stand offish and rude one store owner even asked me to leave his store when I asked if I could go through some of his inventory after I told him I was a variety collector I have never been back and never will. Just my opinion

It's great that you were able to make it to the show yesterday. It's a great place to see lots, learn lots and meet some good people. The Edmonton Coin Club is another good spot to learn and share.
I'm a collector/part-time private dealer in Edmonton. I'm easy to find on kijiji (search for: Mattscoin) and have a wide variety of coins and banknotes for sale. As long as we're meeting for a sale/business, I'd be happy to let you pick my brain over coffee sometime :)

Evening, So I have a few new 20's in my wallet, so I pulled them out and I only had one that was in the Charlton book. I wish these books would have a beginner or how to part, then again the only folks that really look at it should know already...but here I am lol. So this 20 is a BIE series, but how do I decipher between this being a regular issue note or a single note replacement. I have to get my coin collection here so I can look at what my grandpa started and completed. One step at a time I suppose.... Thanks in advance again

Replacement notes are printed when a printing error occurs; they insert these notes to replace the damaged ones, and searchers can sometimes identify these as replacement notes (although they are otherwise indistinguishable just by looking at it). With the example from your Charlton book, BIE 3.876-3.877, that means that any $20 with serial numbers ranging from BIE 3876000 - BIE 3876999 inclusive are replacement notes. Yours does not fall into that range, so it is not a replacement note. Here is a more updated list that also includes paper money from the journey series: https://goccf.com/t/176510&whichpage=2Keep looking for replacement notes at any chance you can get! I've searched several hundred at home and only found two. By the way, , a fellow Albertan! (I'm from Calgary, though.)

Here's a tip for ya .. if you think you have some notes that are (pardon the pun) noteworthy.... DONT put them in your wallet!!
Now this may be where my own little bit of OCD comes into play... but in my truck and at home I have a few larger sized envelopes... (with the adhesive lick & stick areas covered)
When I go to the bank I will take an envelope put the money in that keeping it flat and safe.. go to nearest comp...
I am of the opinion that the "X" notes and "*" notes that indicated a note was a replacement held some value as it was something different, but now b/c the notes just blend in so easy with others the "fad" and perhaps value of replacements will die off with the exception of a few that really are into that sort of thing... so ONLY the best notes will cut it!!
