I just got back from the bank, picked up 20 rolls of nickels, one roll has all U.S. Jeffersons, Is there anything I should look for?

The only thing that I would think of, would be silver nickels, and the westward journey nickels if there are any. Other than that, if they are not in good condition, there's nothing really special there.

I was thinking about nickels the other day. Why do we all save everything before 1964 (or before 1960, what ever your date is)? They aren't silver (except for War Nickels), and the mintages aren't that low. Is it just that they're old? I'm not digging on anyone, I do it too. I have a couple rolls that I've pulled from circulation over the years and I will continue to do it. But I just got to wondering why ....

The Westward Journey nickels are a series of nickels from 2004-2006 which have a different obverse and reverse than the standard Jefferson nickels. there is a peace medal, a keelboat, ocean in view, buffalo/bison, return to montecello and there might be a few that I missed. These nickels are more recent but they are also collectable. Here is a picture of some: http://www.fastcoin.com/images/Ten-...n-Holder.jpg-Ben

Thanks again.... I did find a few of those, along with 3 1940s, 5 1964s.

If any are in mint condition(uncirculated) then check the steps on the reverse to see if they are full( 5 or 6 steps without any marks to break up the lines).1942-45 were silver(35%)...good luck!

Are the Westward Ho nickels a more limited mint (numberwise)? I've been rolling my spares (I only kept the ones to fill the book).

Isn't it true they were only released in mint sets?

Other than the fact that they were minted for only 6 months each, several hundred million were minted so they are plentiful, if not hoarded. quote: Why 1950-D? What's the difference?
1950-D has the lowest mintage of the entire Jefferson nickel series and it is a key date although the 1939-D is more valuable. Those are the two that you have virtually no chance of finding in circulation. quote: Isn't it true they were only released in mint sets?
Nope, they circulated but because of the low mintage, large numbers were hoarded so many survived in mint state. I think MS 50-Ds are probably more common than moderately circulated ones.

Thanks for answering my question. I think the Presidential dollars might be 'hoarded' because I haven't seen any other than the two I have that were first week released. People hoarded some of the Susan B Anthony dollars I think and I wondered why! I don't think those will be too collected in our lifetimes? I have no idea what and what not to save in case you've not noticed! LOL

I've been hoarding Jefferson for around 5 years. I'm not sure why, it's just fun. They're worth around $0.0674430 if the website I just checked is correct. That means the melt value for a roll of nickels is around $2.70. Nickels circulate less then or other coins. On any cash transaction you might get 3 quarters, 2 dimes, or 4 pennies. But you'll only get one nickel. I wonder what are the chances of assembling a (near) complete set of Jefferson nickels from circulation?

TSmith - I've been working on Jefferson's for a while now, all from circulation. I probably need 15 or so between '38 and '61. I just started checking a stockpile my grandfather had. He passed several years ago but I'm just getting to them now. I actually went out and bought another '38 - '61 Whitman for the occasion! I'll probably be missing about 15-20 from there as well by the time I'm done checking them all. I figure '64 - present is pretty easy to find so why bother since I already have a set of those filled out. The '38 - '61 Whitman should be worth more down the line...
