On the way home from picking up my kid from school, I stopped by the local mom & pop grocery store for milk and bananas. When the clerk handed me my change, I heard a distinctive sound. It was this 1964-D quarter. I can't remember the last time I got a silver coin in change.

Closer examination reveals odd concave characteristics in the legends near the rims, A in DOLLAR filled in, pretty clear doubling of the A and R in DOLLAR, signs of doubling in the D mintmark, and light doubling of UNITED STATES. I can't seem to capture it in photos so I'll give up on that.

I haven't found silver in circulation for possibly 30 years, so it was a fun day. The edges feel sharp and the coin still has incredible luster. Where has it been for the past 50 years? Clearly it hasn't been circulating the entire time, and it never made it more than 60 miles from the Denver mint.

If Cascade is right, I hope it was the best pack of gum he ever had because if this was my child, he would never have tasted another thing in his short life. XD!

Awesome find! These things turn up in the most unexpected places... I think I have gotten two in change from gas stations in the past 6 years or so. Always a thrill to hear that clink of silver in your change!

That's in great shape. Clearly it had been napping for some time in a nice safe place till just before you discovered it.

Thanks everyone, it was definitely fun to hear that clink of silver and immediately know something was in there. Brought me back to my early years. Made me go look up varieties. Still snooping around for D/D types. I think the other (very) minor doubling is probably just worn dies, but the D has a pretty obvious split in the serif upper left. Not sure if I'll 2x2 it or just leave it wild for a bit.

We've all been there. See the 196- on a quarter or dime and think Oh! OH!

And then see that the last number is either 5,6,7,8 or 9.

Nice find!

I've saved hundreds of 90% silver coins from circulation, and over 95% of them have a "D" mint mark. It's quite possible many of them have never left the Denver area.

CelticKnot, that's so funny today, since I just got a 1965 in change. Hmm... something looks old, and... not. This one's definitely been spent for 50 years.
