Today I received this 1921-S Lincoln Cent that I purchased on ebay. The seller said it was Uncirculated, however, the darker spots on Lincoln's cheek, beard, hair and bust sure look like wear to me. The coin also has a lot of marks on it, many more than you'd expect from a coin that didn't see circulation. Finally, the color looks off to me, a deeper red with some purple. The coin is flat and doesn't appear to have much, if any luster. All this makes me suspicious that it's been cleaned. Sorry for the poorer quality photos, but I had to take them with the coin in the holder should I decide to return it. Opinions? Thanks for your help. Paul Bulgerin

Quote: Sorry for the poorer quality photos, but I had to take them with the coin in the holder should I decide to return it. Your pictures are fantastic compared to the auction images! The coin does look AU+ but some of these are so poorly struck there a chance the detail is MS. I agree the color is questionable but that's all I can say. Paying $66 to a seller with terrible images and No Returns was a bit of a gamble but I'm sure ebay will side with you if you choose to return it. I would return it if it were me.

I often bid on coins with bad photographs. Sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't. I figured that ebay will allow me to return the coin if it's clearly not what the seller says it is. They helped me to return a coin earlier this year with a seller who didn't allow returns. I haven't contacted the seller yet. I thought I'd get the opinions of CCF members before doing so.

I don't know how, why, or if anybody does this on copper cents, but it looks like it was re-plated. That splotchy silvery-grey stuff looks weird to me.

Hi Paul, I would say the coin has been recolored,I don't think the coin has been cleaned but it's not uncirculated either.

Hey Paul, the more I look at it the more I'm leaning towards questionable color. I like the strike, few nicks on obverse ,MS-61 TO 63 details. IMO.

I agree with the sellers opinion, this is a mint state coin. This issue is HORRIBLE in MS, I've seen quite a few over the years and color/look has always been bad. At one coin show my favorite dealer had 3 of these in MS....they were all ugly and flat.
Compared to other 21S's I've seen, this one is actually pretty good. MS-62/63RB.

Thank you for all the responses. I'll keep the coin. Since I bought it without a return privilege I don't feel I have a real reason to try and return it since it is an MS coin, even if it's not without its issues.

AU-58, it appears to have had some light circulation.
