I stepped outside my comfort zone and picked this up for my Magpie Collection (coins that strike my fancy for no reason)

The seller's description read :1887 British Half Crown Victoria Brilliant Uncirculated Proof-like / Beautiful coin with lovely toning.

I have read some posts re toning - some love it, others don't.

So, did I see a gem and end up with a cow patty?

Looks like it has been cleaned and retoned, but a nice looking coin nonetheless

I have an 8 Reales Mexico with similar "scratches" which have been attributed to die polishing marks. As the marks on this coin dont degrade the portrait or other raised surfaces, for now I will go with that explanation on this coin. Victoria's portrait appears flawless, but I don't have it in hand yet.

A note from the seller tells me he has had the coin in his collection for 30 years and it was in this condition when he bought it.

I thought for <$40 it was worth a shot. I'll let my kids deal with it when I'm gone :)

This is probably the most common date for a Victoran half Crown in high grades.
It seems that they were mostly hoarded by the Public as a commemmoration of the Jubilee.

Affordable way to commemmorate in silver; everybody could have an example for a reasonable cost, and if you needed the money it was easily spendable, except that they were kept anyway, if another half crown was available be spent.

Hence the strong bias to 1887 for the Half Crown in high grades.

Of all the Victoria portraits this is my least favorite. She looks grumpy and the size of the crown looks misplaced and unbalanced on her head. Younger portrait coins are much more attractive I think and the Gothic crown is just stunning.

As with almost everybody else, I dislike that tiny crown sitting on the top of her head. It looks silly.
I cannot think why such a small crown would have been made.

The rest of the profile however, looks to be very faithful to the contemporary photographs of the time.
