This coin was given by a friend who wants to know what happened to it. At first I thought it may have been painted, but looking at it, it is way too semetric, there is no indications of paint, drip lines, wear off, etc. But this coin is golden, not gold, but really sharp gold, bronze look to it. I also see perhaps some extra thickness in the word liberty and the IGWT, with some faint possibly doubling.

They can't add brass to Cents.
Brass
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brass is any alloy of copper and zinc; the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses, each of which has unique properties[1]. Note that in comparison bronze is principally an alloy of copper and tin.[2]. Despite this distinction, some types of brasses are called bronzes. Brass is a substitutional alloy. It is used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance; for applications where low friction is required such as locks, gears, bearings, ammunition, and valves; for plumbing and electrical applications; and extensively in musical instruments such as horns and bells for its acoustic properties.

Brass is a blend of the two metals used to make Cents. (Copper-Zinc.)

Looks like a poor plating/painting job to me. The fields are very rough and do not have BU luster. So I say this was added to the Cent post minting.

I have pulled just about a whole denom set from circulation which have been either gold painted or plated .

Keep in mind anything done to a coin which alters it from its original condition is damage and cannot add value to the coin IE all of the gold ,platinum and painted State Quarters, ASE's and Kennedy half dollars and any other coin type not mentioned specifically !

Perhaps these photo's will help also, they show more luster, using the right lighting, and I have tried to take any "paint" off by using turpentine, denatured alcohol, and nothing came off. But if you all agree it is painted, I guess it is, you are all the experts, I am just wrongalot.

Painted /plated it really makes little difference the coin is altered ,, and has no added value .

Check this out ,, it would be my guess that more of this will be seen in the future and those who find them need to be aware of a few things .

this is posted for information only and in no way is any part of it to be considered endorsed by me or this forum .

but read what they do and advertise for what can be done !

http://www.beckerindustries.com/gold_plater.html

coins are mentioned specifically ! I would expect everyone who buys one of these machines to do a few coins and there are hundreds of dealers for them !

Whooooaaa, that is going to have alot of people wondering if their coin is altered or not. You could take a regular coin and plate it and put it on ebay as a "GOLD" coin. And I am sure that there are people out there who would do such a thing.

Could even be a clear finish over it. Such as lacquer? That was popular at one time. But they usually turned dark with time. ended up worse looking than the un-altered BU coins.
