Looks nice. What's the inscription? Do you wear it as a necklace?

Ya its on a 14k chain. Look at the color diff of the 14k loop and how seamless it was attached to the 22k coin. Plus the detail work. Whoever made it back then had some skills. Maybe a jeweler? You had to have bucks back then to afford to gift a dollar away. Does anyone know the inflation rate to today?... inscription is PAL or any combo of the 3

If you like it, keep wearing it. The stories it could tell would be amazing.

I'm guessing the inscription are the engraved initials "L A P" due to the way they overlap.

Ya I just haven't researched true value yet but I know it's rare and don't want to damage or polish to much of it due to value and significance...
The stories would be amazing. I always think of that jeff goldblum & cindy Lauper movie "Vibes" where he could touch an item and see its entire history and journey through the years. That's what I always think of when I ponder the question "what superpower would you want if?"

Oh and by chance is it possible to narrow down which of the 5 years or mints it's from using obverse markers?

I think $1 in 1865 is around $25 today but factoring in the jewelry value we're likely talking $2 in 1865 and $50 today!

The way I look at it $1 represented somewhere close to a days pay for a semiskilled worker. So equate it to a days pay for semiskilled worker today and you are probably in the $150 -$200 range.

Just for reference, army privates in the Civil War made $19 a month.

The order of the letters according to convention is "LAP" as I understand it. The first letter is the one you touch moving from left to right, and the last one from top to bottom. Middle initials are neither the left-most or top most letter. It is on a Type I one dollar gold host with attached loop. You have to wonder who made it and for whom, on what occasion? It cannot be from before 1849, and most likely is post-Civil War. I see no harm in wearing it. Enjoy!
