Does this look like a genuine coin or counterstamp? The diameter is 39 m.m. and it weighs 26.7 grams. It looks like the edge has an overlap but the opposite side has an edge bang where another overlap should be making it difficult to determine. I can't scan the edge. I have no clue about the counterstamp.

The cut in the edge by the "C" might've been done to see if it was genuine (when it was circulating).

I don't think it's a modern forgery, but first things first - weigh it, then determine its specific gravity.

Correct diameter and weight. The overall appearance of the coin looks very nice, no tell tales to suspect it is fake.

I will show the edge of my same year coin for you to compare.

To me the countermark looks totally original.

Worldnumis, this is my coin that I think it is genuine. You can see two edge overlaps at the 4th and 8th edge pictures. The edge is 26.42 grams and 38.7-38.9 mm in diameter.

The coin and the counterstamp do look genuine to me. Someone however test cut the rim so I would try to clean the bottom of the test cut to see if there is a change in color. You could also do a Specific Gravity check to make sure the density is 10.3.

Quote from Coincraft's 1998 Catalogue:
"It soon became apparent that a large quantity of coins bearing forged (contemporary*) countermarks were in circulation. An (octagonal*) alteration was therefore made to the shape and size of the counterstamp."

* - my words.

I don't have the skill or knowledge to identify forged counterstamps, either.

sel_69l You are absolutely correct about there being numerous forgeries of the Geo III privy stamp but the one on this coin uses a design that is generally accepted as being genuine. I own over 50 8 reales with counterfeit stamps and the sub-varieties are virtually endless.

VERY few counterfeit stamps are well executed however.
