Recently there has been a multitude of posts stating that there should not be likenesses of presidents or any persons otherwise on coins. Those posters feel that coins should have symbols representative of their countries of issue on them, not long-dead politicians.

Then we get to the Presidential $1 coin series... which, truthfully, at first glance seems like there's no clear way to NOT have the likeness of each president on the obverse.

Well, how about if we brainstorm other ways to represent each President? It would have to be a fairly straightforward, iconic image. Some are easy... some very difficult. The historians among us would be able to provide a few good ideas I'm sure. But would those ideas resonate with the public? Not sure it matters since the Presidents' ugly mugs don't resonate as it is.

Anyway, just a thought. Again, I know these could be easy and difficult.

My opening suggestion is for Andrew Johnson. If such an imaginary series came to fruition I would propose an image of Alaska on the obverse to represent Seward's Folly, which happened while he was in office.

I'd offer a suggestion as to what George W. Bush's obverse should look like, but this is a family-friendly forum...

President Benjamin Harrison
23rd President (1889-1893)

Put a Light Bulb on the obverse!

Why you ask?
He turned the previous presidents surplus into a huge deficit, causing the country to enter a Great Depression. He feared for his life so much because of this that he had his servants turn his lights on and off for him. Just in cased someone tried to electrocute him.

Here's the problem with the idea. Not all Presidents have been good for the country. If a positive image has to be associated with each President, then most everyone will view the coins as propaganda. This would be especially true of more recent Presidents as we all have our own opinions.

I suppose you are correct but then why have a Presidential coin series in the first place?

The mint could start adding color like Canada did with the Great Lakes series. Fantastic looking coins by the way.

Then for President Clinton they could have a blue dress and maybe a cigar on the coin.

I'm hopped up on Easter candy right now...sorry if that's to much.

I vote for a Homes of the Presidents series. We have already had a few depicted in the past.
