I am sure this has been kicked around more than once, but I do not remember it so I will ask. Between the big three, PCGS, NGC and ANACS, which one do you use and why? Are there advantages between them based on something like grade or type? By this I mean that maybe PCGS is hard on gold or maybe NGC tends to be a little kinder to special coins. I understand you have to join both PCGS and NGC before you can submit coins and that as a ANA member you can submit to NGC without joining. I am probably going to join one and do not know which. Any thought or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What started me thinking about this was the group submission with Superdave. Our submission went to PCGS, but they chose to send some to NGC. I guess their are some reasons and I will ask Dave but wanted everyone's opinion. thx, Jim ***Edited by Forum Dad to move to TPG forum***

NGC tends to be harder on older coins, easier on moderns. PCGS gets the bigger bucks. ANACS has one big advantage, they will slab problem coins, I sent in an 1858/7 Flying eagel and it was slabbed as cleaned, but genuine, better than not having it certified.

If I am getting a coin slabbed generally its to check my grading skills against the TPGs So PCGS is normally my first choice. I however collect varieties and ANACS/ICG both have good variety attribution with the additional advantage of not having to join a club. Since I let my PCGS membership lapse this year any future submissions will either be piggy backed on other members submissions or be sent to ANACS/ICG. Either way I don't slab to increase the resale value just to confirm my own opinion of a coin.

PCGS if you ever want to resell. I just went through capturing past auctions at Heritage to prepare myself for the upcoming show I am attending. Far and away PCGS was higher in the same grade than the other two. Some were not even close. As for the NGC submission with Superdave, one of the reasons things went there was I was having notes graded, and it was much cheaper I think. That and I think some varieties that PCGS would not recognize. I think if I was going to buy moderns, I'd probably stick with NGC. Plus, I own almost a complete set of ASE's in MS69 by NGC. For the older stuff, PCGS just continues to bring a premium. Some may not like it, but it is pretty much documented fact.

Jaobler had one coin he wanted submitted to NGC looking for the Star designation; that's something PCGS doesn't have. Personally, I prefer NGC, but that's more because I've had my fill of PCGS, on many levels. It's my opinion that there is no difference in technical ability between either company. If NGC is "easier" on Moderns (and the MS/PF70 statistics tend to bear this out), it's a recommendation against NGC.

There is actually a Big Four. PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. The Professional Numismatists Guild study lists only these four grading services at Good or better.
As a collector, I prefer ICG not just because they are ranked as very accurate according to the Greysheet, but because their by-laws do not allow them to make markets in coins. Not being owned by coin dealers reduces the chance of a conflict of interest when it comes to grading. Hence the word INDEPENDENT Coin Grading-ICG.
I have used all four and I certainly respect all four of them but I use ICG most often.

Bluegrass, I have never really considered them and I appreciate your input. Guess I have been a TPG snob. I will look into them more. Thx, Jim

Your welcome, and believe me I understand the biggest two- PCGS and NGC have the lion's share of large coin dealers and auctioneer's high dollar coin business as you can see from the large ads.
Another thing I like about ICG is the coin grader professionals themselves are so well known by name and reputation and not just part of the unnamed grading staff like in the hugest services.

I find very little attraction to any of them beyond authentication of certian coins ,,
But if I was to pick one it would more than likely be PCGS and that is simple economics ,, they command the larger premium (I guess their plastic is more pure than the others ) because in reality that and an opinion (which is often incorrect )is all they are selling .
and we all know the truth about opinions !

So, if I read you right, The only 2 Viable/Honest TPG's are NCGS and NGC. I have seen other Graded Coins for sale on ebay from: ANI, ANACS, GEC, HCGS, ICG, INB, INS, NCGS, NCI, NNC, PCI, PGS, SEGS, SGS, Truegrade. Who owns them & How do they rate (on a scale of 1-10) Thanks folks, Happy New Years to all.
