Hello! My name is DaSlayer (not my real name obviously) and I started to collect silver coins a couple of days ago. I only have a couple but here they are: 1945-P War Nickel 1944-P War NickelCanadian 1955 Quarter (I know all of the above are illegal to melt down) War Nickel information found at http://warnickels.com/Edited by DaSlayer 04/05/2015 12:46 pm

Cool! I've been collecting silver for about 4 months or so, and I only ahve a little bit more than you! By the way, I belive that War Nickels can be melted, case-and-point being that the US mint collected a good percentage of these nickles after the war and melted tham down again, because even in 1942 these nickles were worth more than a nickle.

You're on you're way now! The silver bug bit me a few months ago. I'm putting together an ASE set currently. Quote: I know all of the above are illegal to melt down That depends on WHERE your melting them. I don't believe melting a Canadian quarter is against US law.

Yeah, so I could melt down a Canadian coin in the US and an American coin in Canada.

I think you will enjoy the silver Roosevelt dimes. No real expensive coins in the group. All can be coin roll hunted with enough time and patience. All can be bought at the local coin shop (LCS) for roughly melt value (my LCS was at $1.30 for each silver dime this past weekend, Mercury dimes and Roosevelt dimes. Try and see your silver stash / coin collection as something you didn't needlessly consume elsewhere (like a 44 ounce Big Gulp on you way to work or your way home from school) and instead you still got the satisfaction of spending your money, you just spent it on something that will retain some value, silver coins. They may go up or they may go down in value, but they always have some value. That 44 ounce Big Gulp isn't just an expense, it is a future liability so a poor investment all around compared to silver. . . .
