I was looking over my Jefferson nickel collection today. I probably have not looked at it closely in twenty years. All of the coins are stored in the windowed cardboard holders except a few which are in slabs. A good number of the proofs from the early 60's through the early 90's have turned milky white and/or have milky white spots on them. I know for sure that they were not that way when I put them in their holders. In fact, I didn't put some of them in their holders. A minority that I put in their holders or were put in by someone else show no milkyness or spots at all. Any idea what causes this and is it possible to fix them with some sort of proper cleaning? Thanks in advance.

I would use MS70 on them. Its an ammonia based solution that you can buy at most coin shops or shows. I will not take off milk spots on ASE's but clears up milky proofs. NO COPPER. nlp

Anything which can be done when these show up on copper or zincoln? I had always thought that nothing could be done to clear them up.

I readup on MS70. There seems to have been a recent formula change to a pinkish color. Is this the version you're taking about. If so, I can order some and give it a try.

Any idea what's causing this milky spotting toning to begin with?

I haven't seen the new version. Buy a bottle and try on some change. I wouldn't use it on circulated coinage or copper. nlp
Rest in Peace

I would not do anything with them until you read about coin conservation as opposed to cleaning.

After that, you will want to experiment on non-numismatic coins before every doing anything to a coin of value.

What you have has been going on twenty years. A few more weeks or months will not hurt.

True. I definitely don't want to damage, only conserve.
