Looks like a Proof 1872 3CN to me, though better photos would be helpful. Not a terribly expensive coin PR60 is around $200+ and they can run upwards of $4.5K for a really nice PR66/67 one. The large carbon spot on the reverse certainly keeps this one out of a PR67 DCAM category IMO.

ok.there's the real amateur in me. inherited these coins and know nada about numismatics. Ding!! - this is a 3c nickel vs a 3c silver!

carbon stuff is actually a bright green substance! Might send it to PCGS

I agree that this looks like a proof strike. The mintage on the proof 1872 3 cent nickel is only 950.

PCGS has a coin conservation service - they might be able to get rid of the green spot.
