I am interested in starting my type set collection (acutally I have a lot of the coins needed), but with the Dansco hard to find and expensive when you do. I know there is a shield intercept album and I think whitman makes one as well. Which alternative album is as comprehensive or more so than the dansco. Which alternative is of the best quality?

And one more where do you guys buy your albums affordably

Thanks
G

I can't help you with the Type Set alternative albums from Intercept or Whitman, but I buy my Dansco Albums from Wizard Coin Supply.

Whitman 9434 and 9435 type set albums. They are far more comprehensive than any Dansco type set out there.

You can buy them here. They are under the "miscellaneous" category.

I have a "7070" type collection that isn't actually in a Dansco album. Quite a few of my type pieces are MS and I don't trust them in any album. I have them in Mylar flips and cotton padded envelopes in a binder. No one says it has to be in an album unless of course that is what you want.

Well, considering how much a type set will eventually cost, an investment in a Dansco 7070 is well worth it imo.

I agree with celticsoul. You can always transfer to a 7070 at a later date if you want to. I also agree with edweathers post too.

My 7070 was finally completed a couple years ago and it did not happen overnight. I purchased my 7070 album in the mid-1970s so I did not need to worry about that.

Best of luck.

This is a tough question ..

In my opinion Dansco is the best quality album.

Intercept Shield is close, but I don't like how the
coins fit into the albums.

Some like Whitman .. but quality is not as good as Dansco.
And Whitman only has 20th century type album, that is nice
but does not have older classic coins. They do have a two album set, but has some vary hard and expensive coins to
complete.

So ... if Dansco is the right choice, what is the right
thing to do.

The choice are, find a very good condition one, even it is
more than it should be. Or wait until Dansco releases a
new album.

If Dansco never releases a new album .. then buying a album
now would be the best choice.

If Dansco releases a new album, there is a chance they may
add some higher priced coins that you may not want to have
in your album. Or it might be a great new album .. and be
worth paying to get a new album, even if you have a older one.

Which is what I will do if Dansco comes out with a new album.

One thing to consider, doing a type set album takes most
people many years to complete, and if like me .. many years
to upgrade. So you can just buy the coins and worry about
the album later.

After writing all this .. I know what I would do ..

Just find a good Dansco 7070 online .. and pay the
$50 to $70 for it ... and be happy with it.

Although I love my Dansco 7070 album, if I needed to buy a new type album today I would probably go with the Intercept Shield album. First of all, it's actually available for purchase brand new at a reasonable price. Second of all, the quality is good, even if not perfect. Third, I do like the fact that it has holes for some additional varieties not included in the Dansco album. Fourth, I'm starting to think that Dansco will NEVER update their 7070 album.

I started with a 7070 album, but then photographed all my coins and have created a virtual 7070 album online. This allowed me to go ahead and add all the extra varieties myself. It's nice to be able to see them all online at one time, but I do miss being able to have them all actually in a single album.

Dansco, the company, needs to sell the coin album business to Whitman. Then Whitman can contract Dansco to make the albums as they always have, while Whitman handles the design/layout, marketing, and distribution. I think Dansco would rather be handed the specs and make the product.

That aside...

I would go with the Intercept Shield album. While not perfect, it is the closest thing to a 7070.

You could try and be lucky enough to find someone with an older 7070 that has been used. I did that and although it is pretty worn and the most modern coin available is the Bicentennial coinage, I got the 7070 just for trading a Silver Maple Leaf. Compliments of a member from the forum here. :)

This is a really self-serving question, but how much should a "gently" used 7070 bring? I plan on breaking up my 7070 set within the next year and I'll have the empty album to sell.

Put it up for auction and let the bidders decide.

This.

Do not rely on the opinions on those of us not really interested in buying one.

I am beginning to think as barryg that Dansco will not ever complete the update that they said was going be released by the end of either July or September of 2013. I have not seen a manufacturer stop production of such a popular product even when it was announced there was going to be updates to it. Those manufacturers which did stop production of a product had the updated version on the market very quickly so as to keep any loss of revenues to a minimum.

There have been a number of good suggestions for alternatives and since the 7070 album is hard to locate and very pricey you now have the opportunity to customize a pseudo 7070 as you wish. You can start with the types included and add additional varieties for each denomination as desired then store the coins in the method that you feel most comfortable with.

As a person who is considering about buying a 7070 in the near future...do you have to add pages to the album eventually? Like does a standard Dansco 7070 come with pages for the gold coins as well? I've also seen pictures of a 7070 that had slots for commemorative issues and the 1976 bicentennial issues. Do these pages come with the album or do you have to buy and add these individual pages later?
