Thats a ASE (American Silver Eagle bullion coin) its one ounce of silver and has a face value of $1.00 but was never meant to circulate for face value, its value moves with the spot value of silver

Edit: this is from the mints website, so I guess it is the 2007-W ASE

This distinctive set features uncirculated versions of the circulating dollar coins produced by the United States Mint in 2007: the four Presidential $1 Coins from the United States Mint at Philadelphia, a Sacagawea Golden Dollar from the United States Mint at Denver and the stunning American Eagle Silver Dollar Coin produced at the United States Mint at West Point. A Certificate of Authenticity is included. The special packaging allows the coins to rotate.

It's crap. It's just another thing that the mint wants you to buy along with Presidential dollar singles, and Presidential P+D sets, and P sets and D sets..the list goes on..its still the same coins your already have from 2007 proof and mint sets..
Rest in Peace

I wasn't aware of it.

Guess I missed it while looking at the Mint's web site page.

You folks missed it because they just announced they were going to offer it two or three weeks ago and it just went on sale last week. As Lucifer said it is just the Mint trying to get people to buy multiple examples of the coins they sell by putting the same coins in different packages. They are trying to capitalize on that group of collectors who feel that in order to be "complete" they have to buy one of everything the mint offers. So you can buy the presidential proof set of the four dollar coins, the regular proof set that has the four president dollar coins, the silver proof set that has the four president dollar coins, and the four individual proof president dollars. Once you do that you have four proof examples of each president. I would not be surprised to find out that they probably offer sets of the president dollar and First Spouse medal in proof as well so you can buy a fifth set of proof president dollars.

I agree this is just another packaging gimmick by the mint but I also have to admit I like this better than most of the others because it does give you all the $1.00 face coins that the mint offers and since the 2007-W ASE is sold out this may be the only way to get one from the mint right now even though you have to pay double face for the Sacagawea and the President dollars (added onto the $21.95 price of the ASE itself)

Yes, I ordered two of them.... I like them ! Eagerly awaiting their delivery ! Repackaging or not...... it's a good idea from the Mint to have all of the dollars minted for the year in a set now. And after all, each one of these will be minted or have been minted for many years now. They've been minting those "silver eagles" since 1986 or so I believe and the Sacagawea for a handfull of years too (now not circulating anymore) and of course now we have brand new Presidential dollars....... ALL OF THIS "SHOULD" BE IN A SET AS FAR AS I'm CONCERNED ! AND IT'S A GOOD IDEA TOO ! I LIKE IT !

Oh but that is OT all the dollars. I can see it not if this goes over well. Either next year or in a later year this set comes out a little earlier, and then they have the same set but with all the proof versions, and then maybe a set with all the unc versions including the unc commem dollars, and then the proof versions including the commem dollars and then finally one giant set that has all the circulation dollars, the SAE, and the commems in both unc and proof. That's four more sets we can sucker the collector into buying. Sell them the same coins eight to ten times just with different packaging.

good point...... if they do all of that....... that will be getting kind of rediculous I agree ! But embarassingly enough, if they came out with a "dollar" set that had both of the commerative Silver dollars for that year in proof, the Sac in proof, & the four Pres. dollars in proof along with a Silver Eagle...... I hate to admit, but I'D BUY IT ! I know I get the other "proof" sets in other packaging, but it's just the quality coin that I'll have "MORE" of ! I know that's annoying and bad of me and that the Mint loves to see me coming........and that they're making U.S. coins more "attractive" to the American public other than the "small" collecting community that's always been there. They're hoping to make more money of course and they will, but it brings 100's of thousands more to the hobby too, who can then progress into deciding what they want and what they don't want as they go along and "evolve" into a serious collector or just the occasional "mild interest" purchaser. The "packaging" will teach new and old to appreciate our history and be excited to own different things showing this stuff.......... I do understand "money value buying", but "the other side of the coin" is there too to be understood. (no pun intended hee hee) I know my arguement in buying the same coin repackaged is weak, but people do buy stuff because it's "cool" to them, whether or not it's smart from a financial standpoint.

I heard something on the radio the other day about using different bait to catch different fish.

That's all this is. I buy the commems, the mint and proof sets in silver and clad and the ASE unc. and proof coins. Throughout the year I buy unc. coins to fill albums so by the time I get the Mint set in the fall I don't really need any of the coins. I have 4 Pres. proof sets (one with each proof set I bought, I did not buy of the $15 sets) and I only need one. I do not have any interest in a legacy set or an individual proof dollar or a annual dollar set. I have everything already.

Now out comes the different bait (repackaging) and the Mint has a whole new type of fish to catch. There are a lot of people that don't buy the products as they come out. Some people wait until the end of the year. Some people only buy for holiday gifts and I am sure those pretty packaging options are going to sell a lot of coins. They are smart. They make a lot of money.

Buy whatever you want to. I do.

Jim
