I note there is no grade applied... just a TPG-esque container.

At least the auction starts at $0.01. I'm a buyer at that price.

I certainly agree with the implication of the question.
Pity not ALL ebay sellers can do it reasonably well.

How does one determine how to grade a coin? Particularly determining matte or satin finish?

Learning how to grade for yourself it is essential.

The best way to do that is by posting your own grading opinion, in threads such as
"You vs. PCGS"
Also look at the PCGS Photograde site. This is a great learning resource, but it is for U.S. coins only.

The learning process is much longer for ancient and medieval coins.

Always a big help for yourself and if you have the confidence, if you can make a decision to buy based on examining a coin in hand. That is why you should require yourself to grade your own coins, either buying or selling.

I don't get your point. A substantial percentage of collectors use those slabs to store their coins. That's why every coin supply vendor in the country carries them.

The case probably cost a good 30-50% of what the auction will realize, but I see nothing wrong with storing your coins in TPG-esque snap cases. If I had a bunch of PCGS/NGC slabs, I would probably buy generic slab cases for any coins that are nice enough to justify a case, but not worth the grading fee.

At least he didn't print a bogus grade from a fake company.

I like it. If I was the seller, the only thing I might have done differently is type up a label versus hand writing it. It really shouldn't impact the final sale price, but people like stuff that looks more official and less do it yourself.
