The new 2008 Commeratives will be a $5.00 gold piece, Silver Dollar and a .50 cent piece "ALL" featuring different depictions of Eagles honoring the Bald Eagle Recovery Program in Tennessee according to the U.S.Mint. Of course price of them individually or as a set to the side, does anyone like these ? It's shown on the U.S. Mint "press release" section. The designs are there to be looked at.

Also, I don't remember a .50 cent piece ever being offered as a commerative coin..... interesting

You don't? look at a dansco7070 album, they have almost a whole sheet dedicated to half dollar commemoratives, they have been making them since since before the turn of the century and I know they still made them for Mt Rushmore,Liberty (of 1986),George Washington, Bicentennial of Congress,500th anniversary of Columbus Discovery and just about everything else (the ones I mentioned was up until 1992 but I am sure they were made after that).Usually people put classic Commems in their Dansco7070 albums but I put modern ones in mine just because I didn't see any reason to pay for 4 coins for one type of coin (a commemorative half dollar) and the moderns are alot cheaper than the classic commems Edit: after looking at the pictures of the line drawings I have to say I like the Reverse of the half dollar alot better than the Reverse of the $5.00 and $1.00 coins, theirs looks like a cheap copy of the presidential seal, the half dollar has a head of the eagle with ab American flag behind it (a far superior design in my opinion)

Oh ! I just assumed those were all "silver dollar" commeratives ! Before this year, the Columbian Expedition is the only one I ever had I think.

These will be big sellers. Who doesn't love bald eagles? Election year, the country at war ... it's an instant hit.

I too think they will be big sellers. But you would think they could come up with something better than what they have on the reverses. The silver dollar reverse reminds me of the rubber chickens on the three stooges.

I would like to go on record as saying I think these will be popular also and I already stated how much I like the Reverse of the Half Dollar but not all that enthused about the other Reverse designs but still think these will be a nice addition to the commemorative coins and probably ones I will purchase when they are released. I will probably buy a few of the half's just because of how much I like the design

Definitely going to buy one. I still have no commemoratives in my 7070.

I like 'em. Does anyone have dates when they will be released?

Mid to late January is the release date I think. Yeah, I thought they were incredible looking coins ! And I'll definately order a "set" if they come like that or certainly individually. (plus I can't wait to add a 6th gold coin to my collection !) So, as the years go by, does anyone think the value on these will appreciate well ? or just barely a little bit ?

there is actually no telling on if they will appreciate in value quickly or not, anything anyone says now would be purely speculation at this point, but judging by the few comments so far in this thread it looks like collectors are going to like the design and they may sell out quickly but that will be the ultimate test, how fast they sell out once they go on sale

I likely will and if I don't, my wife will - she has a zoo going on. Regarding the 1/2 dollar commemorative, didn't the first flight commem's have a 1$ and a half?

I'm sure they'll be popular. I don't want one, as I agree with Franklin that the turkey would have been a better choice.

I don't think they will appreciate that much at all. It's an iconic image, lots of people will want them and with high mintages, they certainly won't be rare. They will become commons as far as commems go. Buy them because you like the design and if they happen to appreciate in your life time ..great..if not they should always be worth atleast bullion. Unfortunately, they may be a lot less than issue price.
