I have a thing and a buyer, and to protect us both we'd like to move the transaction to ebay's system but I want to make sure he's the one who gets the item. Aside being in real-time contact when I post the BIN, is there any way of ensuring this?

The only thing I will do is alert the buyer when I list and list with a buy it now option at the agreed upon price. The rest is up to the specific buyer to make sure he/she is the first one to click that buy it now button.

Set an outrageously high buy it now price and have the option to accept offers. He makes the correct offer, you accept.

You could also list it at a much much higher buy it now price and take offers and when you receive the agreed upon counter offer, you can complete the transaction.

My brother "set-up" several sales on ebay with a local seller back when Bing offered big cash-back offers. You could literally sell cash for profit on both ends. They did it as real-time Buy-It-Nows.

You can also use escrow on ebay.

Yes, I have done this a number of times:
Make sure the listing is FAR above current market value, and set it as a buy it now- 1 day listings work best for stuff like this
Also, when doing the title, put something like 'Agreed upon deal JSMITH1'or something to that effect
Just make sure the description is accurate for the item you are selling so you both get the protection you want

Why not just have him pay via PayPal, you save 10% ebay fees, he still has buyer protection through PayPal. WIN WIN!

Because we're both long-time Paypal members, and we know how capricious those jerks can be. Paypal is one of the things we want an ebay record of sale to protect us from. I never thought about the ridiculous BIN. That works.

You can create a private sale where only invited bidders can bid. Search ebay help pages. I've seen them, never participated

I'd second the idea of a high BIN and accepting an offer from the correct buyer if you're stuck on ebay. My suggestion, though, and something I've done in the past - is to post an ad listing elsewhere, in a free venue. This can be used to support a paypal claim if necessary, just as an ebay listing. As long as there is a clear description of the item in question, that should support any claim just fine. I've had success using forum posts to convince paypal of my side in a dispute before, and have not had them question its legitimacy vs. an ebay listing.

I'd be less worried if Paypal acted consistently and predictably in that fashion. However, there is 15 years of evidence saying they act exactly in opposite of that - capricious decisions sometimes denying the proof which the evidence provides them. You've been lucky.
