I saw this last week .. kept thinking about it,
so I picked it up today.

Not sure if Dog tags (sort of a dog tag) fall into
the token category.

Interesting story ...
"The Tailwaggers Club was founded in 1928 by Captain Horace Hobbs. Dogs that became members of The Tailwaggers Club received a special collar medallion engraved with the Club's logo and the motto 'I help my pals'. In just over a year, the Club flourished and more than 200,000 dogs had enrolled, enabling £20,000 to be donated to help the work of the Royal Veterinary College.
(two tails rubbing together)"

While I personally wouldn't collect them, they are sufficiently "numismatic" for them to get a write-up in numismatic magazines and club newsletters here in Australia.

I wouldn't call them "tokens", however, as there is no intended commercial or monetary purpose related to their use. I'd classify them under "medals".

Yes according to Tokens and Medals by Alpert and Elman dog's tags and even the licenses are considered to fall in to the exonumia.

Hey GR58, check out my ww1 dog tags post (ww1 coins of a different sort...) on the main coin forum that I'm gonna have the mods move to here. It is VERY cool if your into very early dog tags... They didn't even call them dog tags back then, they were called "ID discs"

I don't think yours is an actual dog tag though? Looks like a veterans type club token or medal? I could be wrong though

This sort of dog tag is considered exonumia and not a 'medal.'

Military "dog tags'" correct nomenclature is identification disc or tag depending on when made are not in my opinion numismatically related.

I've collected some local dog tags over the years - they have a neat history and fit well in an exonumia collection.
