Yes technically they are all silver dollars. I think you can sub sec them into classic and modern or made for circulation or not though if one wants to

I've seen several people refer to Ikes and SBA's as silver dollars, but I only call the ones made of real silver "silver dollars"

99% of the lay population calls clad Ikes "silver dollars". Including my own father when he used to give them to us as allowance money. Now I do know some tellers who, when asked for silver dollars, will start looking for the SBAs.

If Presidential dollars are "golden dollars" Then anything silver (colored) and a dollar is a "silver dollar". I think the majority of people (non-numismatists) would agree.

Any coin with silver content and face value of $1. I can't refer to non-silver coins as silver, I simply cant.

Absolutely true, but the weakest numismatist is still a nitpicker superior to any other subset of humanity. Hence, this thread.

Quote: If it is/was US Legal Tender with a face value of $1, and it's silver (in whatever percentage), it's a Silver Dollar. My thoughts exactly.

With Canadian currency, I consider a "silver dollar" to be ANY year regardless of the silver content as it is silver in color & is worth a dollar...hence a "silver dollar".
But that's just me I guess...

I definitely agree, if only retroactively. That is, it was not true until the golden dollars came out and were being referred to as such. In this moment, the silver adjective changed from content to colour.

I had to read through this twice ... made me smile both times. I guess this a example how there are so many different opinions. I am sure .. some think that the others are wrong .. I will have to give more thought into .. if there is a right or wrong answer.

I do not think there really is a right or wrong here. We collect what we like, so we may as well call them what we like. As long as it is not blatantly wrong, of course.
