Wow. So, those were struck on a quarter planchet? How much are they worth?

The sheet of clad metal that was rolled to a quarters thickness was fed into the machine that stamps out the rounds the size of a half dollar and then they are fed into the press and made into halves. Since the quarter thickness is thinner than that of a half the coins lack details as the press was expecting a thicker planchet. If you are looking for a wrong planchet errors you would find what looks like an Ike dollar in a half box, what looks like a Kennedy half in a quarter box or small dollar box, and so forth down the line of denominations. |

How do you notice those so easily Jack? I see coins all of the time that appear to be about half the thickness of normal halves (mostly from 1995-2000), but somehow the weight is always correct.

They have a different ring to them when bounced off of another coin. When I unwrap a roll I flip them from one hand to the other and have to flip the reverse up ones to the obverse. When shuffling you can hear a different tone when a silver hits a clad or when an underweight or overweight coin hits the rest of the stack. I've had more than a few that sounded differently when dropped or sorted but when weighed came out normal. If you have ever found a Magicians coin you will know how a coins with a different ring stands out even when sorting quickly. I don't think it would be time effective to pull every 1971D and weigh it. It would be like weighing 1982 cents to sort out the coppers. I just chuck them aside because in the time it would take me to weight each one I could go through a whole roll and just pick the known coppers out of it. |

OK If you don't hear from in the near future it is because I got run over by a bus or got crushed by a falling meteor. I just pulled another 1971D half on quarter stock today. I don't know if it was in one of the boxes I had left from yesterday or in one of the 4 I picked up from BMO tonight. And of course it this one also has roller damage I'd prefer silver since I am on a major drought this month and it is easier to move. 2 more boxes left to go through.   Edited by jack jeckel

Why does that look like the Harbor Freight scales people told me not to get because they didn't do .01g? If you are finding all this good stuff with it Jack, then I think I am getting one tomorrow when I get the Father's Day sale! or is it only good for halves and not for dimes and cents because the readability? (and how do you calibrate the thing since I have never found anywhere to buy calibrating weights?)
yeah I probably need to get the thing and check these 200s I have a small stack off cause they seem light and thin.

13 boxes since Thursday. 15 40%ers, 2 1964's, a Franklin, a gold plated counterstamped, a Panama, and 2 1971D struck on quarter stock.  |

You don't really need to "calibrate" it but if you keep putting stuff on it you will need to zero it and even the shipping scale we use at work has the same problem. |
