2009 was a great year, but I also was searching more heavily. 2013 was a disaster and I had great difficulty finding any halves at all. I think this thread has increased competition in my area and at least one fellow coin club member also searches. And I hear enough that "someone comes in every month to clean us out of halves" to know there are other silver hunters in my area.

I only focus on customer-wrapped rolls and avoid bank-rolled boxes/wrappers. I have only done one box in my lifetime and it was a complete skunk with greater than 50% 96 and 2000D BU coins (I think that posting is buried somewhere in this long thread....good luck finding it!). I do have a $500 box on order to do my 2nd box ever, but it is mainly to find BU coins and hopefully to score a few varieties. If I find silver, yeah!

Also, I never re-wrap and re-deposit- I always spend them and get them back into circulation. The reactions are always interesting and I love leaving these as tips at restaurants. many cashiers cash them out and keep them. Since I spend ALL my throw away halves, I can't do too many boxes even if I wanted to, as it ties up too much money. I firmly believe customer-wrapped halves or loose halves in the teller's trays are the way to go. But they are VERY hard to come by.

Occasionally, not often, I get someone's half box dump that, of course, is customer-wrapped, but even in those I find varieties, and some NIFC coins, as most box hunters seem to only be after the silver.

I also search for and keep really nice BU coins, especially 80s, which are exceptionally difficult to find, particularly 85, 86, 88, 89 P&D, 78 P&D, and 99 P&D. I am working on a BU roll set 1971-2000 (no 87) and after almost 10 years, I'm happy to say it is nearly complete. The mid to late 1980s are insanely tough.

It is my firm belief that the Kennedy half set is a sleeper. People have no idea how hard it is to put together a BU set from 1971-2000. The 80s are insanely tough to find in decent shape as so many halves heavily circulated in slot machines and reed edges are worn thin. The later 90s, for not having circulated much as the half fell out of favor in commerce, are surprisingly worn as well. I have some nice BU 96 rolls created from pulling from the one box of halves I got some years ago.

mycrob,

Interesting data, thanks for sharing it. All of the banks in my area are swamped with MWR orders/dumps. I do not bother asking for CWRs because they are always dumps. I do not bother to order boxes because MWRs are heavily hunted and marked in my area (I averaged less than 1, 40%-er for every 4 boxes before I quit last year). Silver recharge in my area is deminimus.

I am curious to see how long it takes for new half hunters in my area to realize they are wasting their time if they are hunting silver. My gut says it will take 2-3 years for them to accept failure and stop searching. In the meantime, I think silver price will drop, which should also reduce the number of hunters who bother to hunt on a routine basis...Time will tell.

Just wrapped up my first box in three years, and second ever.

After the first was a skunk, I'm glad to say this was better.

10 x 40% (2-1966, 4-1967,4-1969-D)

2003 D

1982-P no FG.

Opened 4 boxes today, was going to pick them up Thursday but could not get them until this morning. No Skunks, ended up with 9-40%ers, 1-magic coin, 1-72D No FG, and 1-74D DDO, plus, 6-NIFC, one of them a 2014D. It was a good week with 34 pieces of silver. I just learned from my bank manager that someone else has ordered halves, she told me she has to order them in $1000 and they are only going to pick up one box so it looks like I will get an extra box next week. Thank you for the good luck wishes, I wish you all the same. Enjoy the Pic, and Happy Hunting.

nice work on starting this thread mycrob. Glad to be in it :-)

Just had my best 2 boxes. There were enders on both boxes. 26 in the 1st box, and 29 in the 2nd, for 55.

1st box had a 64, a 42d walker

2nd box had a 64, and a 59 ben, which was an ender.

Between the 2, there were 51 40%ers. Box 1 with 24 and box 2 with 27.

65x7
66x4
67x20
68x10
69x10

one of the 67s was gold plated and I gave it to my friend who opened the rolls with me. its unpictured other than the edge shot.

might not be dream boxes, but felt dreamy lol.

That is awesome Skidbid, nice finds. Glad to see all that silver. Its exciting to see Franklin and walker enders. I hope your next boxes have even more. The more silver I see on these post gives me hope in finding more here. I wish you all great luck and happy hunting. Don't give up!

4 boxes on Monday.

1 box had an ender. 7 40%ers and a 1964.

The other 3 boxes were skunks.

5 boxes since Thursday.

Skunked.

I did find a stickered Kennedy in a box yesterday and today I found a stickered Sac in a box today.

Colles, I am not sure if its better or worse, but I have searched approximately 450 boxes this year and have found 1853 pieces of silver that is about 4.7 per box average. There seems to still be a bunch of silver out there at least I am hoping there is. Skibdib just pulled 55 out of 2 boxes that is very encouraging to me. Wish you all the best luck.

What is the weight (in grams) of one 10 dollar roll of halves, with the wrapper as well? I weighted 6 stacks of halves all came in at 224.x never going over .6. I switched out one coin with a 90%er and the total was 225.3 with each stack it was 225.x grams. I believe if you can figure out the weight of the wrapper, you can pretty much weight test your rolls and know for sure there is no silver in that roll.
