Drove down to San Diego last week and stopped at many banks on the way. Over $500 in halves yielded just 6 40%-silver coins, one BU 1987-D, and one decent clad proof. Seems like the So. Cal area is pretty well picked clean. Quote:the coin I thought was a rotated die was a Magicians coin. RCook, I've sold a few of these on ebay for $5-10 or so, making them almost as valuable as a common 90% silver half. Maybe not a total skunk.... |

There are collectors like most of us and then there are professional silver miners. I look at every coin in every roll for errors and varieties not just silver. The silver miners just crack open rolls and pick out the silver. They only edge search and edge mark whole rolls at a time when the split the paper. Those are edge marked coins. There are a lot of marked coins in my area but every once in a while I will come across a rash of edge marked coins which only last a month or so 2 or 3 times a year mainly because the area is dry for bulk silver miners. Just had 6 more boxes, 5 were skunks and 1 produced 6 1967's. Got 10-12 to pick up on Friday.

Sure glad to see some of you are finding silver, I just got back from camping and I still haven't opened my last 4 boxes from last week. I will crack them tomorrow morning before I dump and pickup another 4 boxes. RCook just like Jaobler said those magic coins are not a total loss $5-$10 bucks on ebay isn't too bad that is if someone buys it I guess. Sure hope I see some silver in the morning. Today, I was almost skunked.
One teller had two halves, and one looked white. I thought I might get a 40%, but sure enough it was a '64! I ended up with about $40 in loose halves, but they'd been picked through. One bank had three CWRs, but put them back up after they found out I didn't have an account.
I found two other CWRs, and one was all Bicentennials.

Anyone ever seen or tried this product for coin cleaning. http://wonderoil.com/safeclean_coin_cleaner I know, I know you're not supposed to clean them and I usually don't, but thought if it was a safe product I might clean a few of my dirtier coins if no damage is done to them. Edited by RCook

I use warm water and baking powder and rub my silver pieces. Makes them look nice.

Thanks. I had one teller last week with four, and three were 40%. Both tellers were pretty young. I don't know if it's because tellers are getting younger, or the price of silver has dropped, but I'm finding silvers in the majority of banks with loose halves.

Well cracked those 4 boxes this morning and in the last box was 1-68. It was an ugly search, I mean there was nothing in those boxes, no errors, no NIFCs, no counterstamped or even nice looking coins except for that 68. Happy to get a piece of silver.
