Anything is possible. The more likely scenario is that you got lucky and got a very good box. You have to remember that even though alot of people are buying boxes and searching them....the dregs are dumped and put back into the system. Banks will send $1000.00 bags back to their change provider who in turn will roll and box them. Sometimes legitimate customer wrapped rolls with silver are also dumped into those bags with all our dumped rolls. Banks are anxious to get rid of halves because they really aren't used anymore and take up space and tie up money that could be better used by them. (and most banks have to wait until they have a $1000.00 bag to ship out).
There are people here that search alot of boxes. Now and then they get a good box. Lately though there seems to be alot of bad boxes.
Probably 75% of the boxes I've searched had no silver at all. I've done much better with customer wrapped rolls. That's probably a major part of the reason boxes have been bad. Everybody here would rather search honest to goodness customer wrapped rolls. (thus, less silver entering back into the system to be rerolled and boxed).
I hope your next box or two are as good as this one. But don't be surprised if it's not. Just keep ripping them open until you get another good box!

First foray into the banks this year. One bank, one customer roll and 9 Ikes. Result, 1-66P(cool), but funny thing is when I asked the teller if she had any more Ikes, another teller said that the fed (or wherever they order from) had called back and said they would send them if they had 'em. Apparently some other customer had asked about Ikes also. I replied " Great! If they had any other "Funny Money", order that too!".
Hey,worth a try, the tellers there are very nice. Has anyone heard of ordering Ikes?

On a break in my schedule today, hit seven random banks that have been popping up in the last few years on US30 near where I live, and none of them had customer wrapped rolls, and in fact, I have never received a half dollar in change this past decade. So at least in the Philadelphia suburbs, I wonder if halfs have essentially gone completely out of circulation.

I was wondering about Ikes, i.e., get $10,000 worth, and maybe get some Morgans or Peaces? It seems a pretty heavy undertaking--literally. Plus, some coin counters don't count large dollars--or as the goofball at the Bank said, those big dollars from the '80s!

I've tried to "order Ike's" when I placed my order's for boxes of half's and they looked at me like I had 2 heads when I told them what I wanted.

No coin counting machines that I use at any Bank has the capability of handling any large dollar coins, only Susan B Anthony's and SAC/Presidential Golden Dollars.


As I make my daily rounds, I just ask the tellers if they have any loose LARGE DOLLAR coins in their trays for sale.

One teller had 17 of them from 1972 in a separate bank envelope and that's how I got lucky and found a 1972P Variety II Reverse last week, by asking for Ike's the same as asking for any loose halfs etc.

2 problems with Ikes as several people have attested to:

1) You get realllllly strange looks when you ask if they have them and even stranger looks when you ask if you can order them

2) As pointed out, there isn't an effective way to dump them short of walking up to a teller and heaving a sack of them on the counter and leaving them with them. They really hate that and you won't make any friends at the bank doing it!
