Picked up my first bag of the new year. I was only able to do half it last night and I pulled the silver that I could see but so far good results.
47 - 40's
17 - Ken 90's
5 - Franks
2 - Walkers
Plan to finish up the bag tonight and dump the clad tomorrow.

Yes I've tried ordering IKEs too with no success. Every once in a rare while they will have a couple at the bank. Several tellers told me that when they do come in, the tellers often will exchange them out. If you do get lucky and score some Ikes for face value, I agree, just spend them for tips, gas, etc. People love getting different kind of money.
I went into a Radio Shack a few weeks ago and paid in halves and the guy was real excited and asked if I had anymmore. I gave him all that I was carrying.

Ironically, my usual DUMP BANK had the following:
Total from $8 loose:
7 40%, 1 '64, 1 Franklin (52)
1 NIFC -- ‘04D
Total from $160 rolled:
24 40%, 1 '64, 1 Franklin (also 52), 1 1974 prooflike
1 NIFC -- ‘05D
Plus one 40% at another bank... for a daily (and 2010 YTD) count of:
27 silver halves/383 total
The funny thing is, those all came from my DUMP BANK. This is the same bank that showed me a full strap of Blue Seal singles, a Federal Reserve Bank Note, etc. and wouldn't give them to me. But the knowledgeable teller was absent that day, so I did all right!
Before I cashed in my dumped rolls, I asked for any other halves in stock.
Most of them had my markings on them. I traded the non-marked rolls for my newly wrapped rolls (which I always thought would annoy tellers), searched them in the car, and brought them back in.
But... the teller was trying to make her $1000 quota to ship-out, so she didn't mind me searching. I claimed I was collecting "one of each date", which to her sounded completely plausible (btw, I think filling Danscos is cool, but I'm just in it for the silver right now.)

Did my first box of halves for the year. 1966 1967 1968-D x 3 1964 and.......my oldest find yet.....1918 Walker!!! It's well worn and has some ugly toning or staining on it, but that's just fine by me!! I also had a 2002-D and 2003-D NIFC and a 1990-D that I would call MS 65. I have never found a coin in circulation that I would consider MS 65 until this one. I picked it up and said "oh nice, a proof" but then was shocked to see the D mint mark. I may put it into my Intercept Shield Kennedy album it's that good.     |

Each time I'm at the bank I ask if they have any halves. I'm always searching for excuses to go to the bank. Today I deposited a roll of quarters just to have a reason to go (No halves.)
How do you all make it to the bank so often? Do you just go in, stand in line, and ask for halves without doing any other bank business? I'd feel weird doing that, plus it sound like it would waste a lot of time.
So, tell me how you get your hands on so many halves!

You can have your checks direct deposited and pay your bills online and get cash back from a purchase or get cash from an atm. The only reason I walk into a bank is to get or dump coin. |

Hmm, good point, ratman4762. Then why is there always such a long line?!!
You're right. What do the bank tellers care if they serve one person instead of three, or if they have to deposit $120 of nickel rolls instead of a $120 check?
I don't know. I still feel out of place if I'm not using a bank for its "normal" or "intended" purposes. I feel like I'm being a nuisance to the teller, and that I'm wasting my own time standing in line.

I've been actively searching halves for almost a year now. I find that most banks are more than willing to sell them to me (although a few of the banks have tellers that keep silver for themselves). Most of these banks I DO NOT have an account with. They see me coming and get the halves out for me. I try not to stop in when they are busy. I rarely have to wait because of this. Most of these banks think I have an account with them because they see me so often. I also search nickels and regularly pick up boxes from these banks that I do not have an account with. As for dumping the coins I search, I roll the halves but run everything else through my banks free Coinstar.

One more question, ratman4762 (for now). When are banks the least busy? A certain day or time? I suppose you could sit outside with a book for awhile until there wasn't a line.

Aroud here lunch time is not a good time to go to the bank. Seems that the tellers are at lunch the same time the banks customers need their services.
I'm also in a small town. Lots of smaller branches that I frequent. I find that they are generally not busy between 10-12 and 2-4. I find them busier at the beginning of the month when SS checks come out and extremely busy on a Friday near the first of the month.

Finished up the bag above and found 5 more 40%, for the grand total of 52 40%'s. Also a first for me is a S mint mark bicentennial 40%. I typically never even look close to most bicentennials but this one really stood out. Was in BU shape. I missed order day this week so I am expecting to get another bag early next week.
Had some time to search $50 in dimes I also had picked up. Found 2 silver rosies. Also had $22 in nickels which I found a full date 1936 Buffalo. So far off to a good start for the year.
