Has anyone ever heard of a '68-D erroneously struck at 90%? Reason I ask is we have one in BU with a totally white edge. There's no trace of plating or copper clad of any kind. Camera is on the blink right now or I'd show it. Went over this thing with a 10X from top to bottom and sideways.
EDIT: I just did the "spin test" and it makes sounds like a 40%. I'd have bet money this was a 90% looking at that edge. Oh well...

I have never been able to tell the diff between 40 and 90 coins by looking at the edge (unless it was worn well, in which case it has been an early frankie or walker). The kennedys look the same to me.

I would say it may be possible for a 1965 or 1966 to be struck on a 90% planchet but very unlikely a 1968 or 1969. Quick test...weigh it. 90% weigh 12.5 grams where 40% weigh 11.5 grams. A quick note, I found quite a few 40% like yours. Not a trace of copper showing. They fooled me too when I scanned the edge of the roll. |

Here's an interesting picture. From what I understand it's the copper strip for the clads before they're plated with the nickel. This was the machine at the Denver Mint. Those of us who found the solid copper cores most likely got the end of the strip that missed the nickel plating (...the next step).  |

I thought all the 40% were like that? I've got almost two rolls of them and they look the same as the 90s from the edge. Isn't the inner core whitish too?

I'm gone for a few days at a conference and I miss the best post on this thread, and possibly on the forum in quite a while. Wow, Wow, Wow is all I have to say! Congrats. I get psyched when I get one silver coin from circulation nevermind a bunch of Morgans like that. I think I would have dropped to the ground and started convulsing.

I also have some that the core shows as bright as a shiny cent, and some that the core is dark and some that the core isn't visible at all. The more you find from circulation, the more likely you'll see the differences that I'm talking about. |

I just assumed silver + copper looked like nickel + copper. Good thing I look at all the dates anyway!

Bought 10 rolls of halves from a bank that I don't have an account with but always has halves on hand. Found 3 40%. I thought one of them was cu-ni clad at first because the core looked very brown.

Did $3k in bags last night. Nothing. My supply bank gives me two types of bags, ones with a certain tag and those are the only ones that produce. These were the other type, heavily marked on the edges. I gotta get the teller to request the other bags...

I was very nervous thinking the person was going to give them back to the teller over the counter!
Once the person said it was OK for me to purchase them instead of the bank, a big sigh of relief kicked in and it was all smooth sailing from that point on.
