Hello, I am in a situation where I have about $130 in NIFC's, about 4-5 rolls of 2002 mixed p's & d's and about 1/2 roll of 2003's,2004's, 2005's, 2006's, 2007's and 2009's and a full roll of 2008's mixed mints, I cant keep this much money tied up right now. What do you guys suggest? Will NIFC's ever be "RARE"? Do they have any Value now? Please help.

5 40%
2 90% (64,64D)

Great box, I got another one coming next week. Last 3 seem to be pretty consistent. Over the last 3 I have pulled over 30 silver

In my opinion high quality NIFC coins have value and will continue to have value because of the low amounts made of them. If you can hold on to them I would, I am. I have about the same amount that you have and am rolling them by year and mint as well.

well, I'm still pondering giving this half dollar search up for a few reasons:

1. I am limited to $100
2. they wont split up a box for me
3. I'm afraid to go a bank I am not a member of
4. I get the same rolls I turn in =/

thinking of going to cents or nickels?

anyone care to advise me back into halves, I am open to new strategies

Don't be afraid to go to banks you don't have accounts at. Just smile and be nice. I go to 5 diff banks I don't have accounts at - no issues.

I agree!

What do you have to loose?- You didn't have any rolls before you went into that bank anyway- Right?

What's the worst that can happen? 50/50- Yes or No- Go for it!

Just remember to be courteous etc whether its a yes or no.

As time goes on I am getting denied at banks that arent mine. They say they have a ton of halves and then ask me if I have an account. I state no and then they shake their heads that they can't give me any. I try to keep a cool demeanor but it sucks knowing those halves are just going to sit there. Banks don't know about their own policies. I have a couple saying that they don't do such currency exchanges to cut down on money laundering... yea. whens the last time you heard of some high stakes half dollar laundering.

$100 isn't your limit...it's simply your starting point.

$25 of that should/could be enough to open up a simple checking account with another bank. Now...you only have $75, but you've doubled your search-area. ;)

5 or 6 90%'ers, and you've gathered your initial $25 back...and have now enabled yourself to spend that $25 opening up another account at another bank, therefore tripling your search-area.

Patience my good man...patience

Well said Scotty. Once you find a little silver you can sell them right away. Reinvest that money. Repeat the process and each time your coin money will grow. Eventually you'll have $500 plus the silvers you pull. Could take a week or could take 4 months -- thats up to the Coin Gods to decide

SDCoinguy,
I would stay with halves mainly because of the ratio of silver halves still in circulation are greater than circulated silver found in quarters & dimes and can thus afford you a better return for profit and/or upgrading coin collections, that being said, it is still enjoyable to roll hunt in other denominations.
Scotty has some good ideas with opening other accounts, I just opened one that gave me $75.00! No minimum bal and I do not have to have direct deposit to avoid a fee! (US Bank) You probably have one in your area, I'm in So Cal too. That makes 3 accounts for me, giving me greater opportunity for dumping and getting rolls,
but #1 Rule...
Dont bring back rolls to the same bank where you received them!
One reason is that they were glad to get rid of them (Don't bite the hand that feeds you)
and two,(as you know) you get the same ones when you ask again!

And like several have mentioned, go into other banks, just be courteous. I politely ask if the teller has any halves or if they could check with the other tellers,
You will be surprised at how many of them will the assist you and not even ask if you're a customer (some do, but oh well!)
You will soon have your favorite banks, for rolls and dumps!

Never underestimate the power of a couple-dozen cookies!

Doughnuts work well too...

More than once, I've been recognized while standing in line at my local bank. (I'm known as "the penny-guy" at the main branch.

I'm on a "first-name-basis" with the vault manager there She lets me know whenever someone comes in and deposits any hand rolled coin....

Picked my usual two boxes of halves on Friday. One box had zero keepers and the other had 6 40%.

SDcoinguy, I wouldn't give up. I only go to banks I have accounts at, but two tellers at two different branches of a bank I go to have told me that they didn't care if I had an account or not. They just don't want me to bring the halves back when I am done searching them. Most tellers couldn't be happier to get rid of the "junk" as they call it: halves or IKE's. I agree though, that 'courtesy is essential'. Good Luck!

scotty11:

Excellent points !

During Christmas, I placed packets of either a 1998 or 2000 Wide AM cent inside Christmas cards along with a copy of what they were etc and gave them out to my "FAVORITE BANK PERSONNEL"!

My FAVORITE TELLER loves foreign coins, so everytime I see her I bring another foreign coin (constantly getting them for the reject bin of coin counting machines etc) in to her and she just loves it!

I also bring in errors/DDO'S/etc to show them what I've found and they are fascinated by it, especially when I hand them my 5x slide out magnifier- they all want one of them!

Kindness begets kindness etc!

I can get just about anything I need with regards to dumping/ordering coins etc from these banks!

First name basis also! Here comes CHUCK!
