I ended up opening the rest of that 2nd box. 4 total NIFC 3 were marked with marker 1 wasent.. Out of the $1000 in halves $125 were Bi-Centennial.. Is that overly High? I knew I see alot roll hunting but I didnt think it was that high.

Why would someone do this to a coin especially because its NIFC. if you are only looking for silver then there is no need to mark coins, it is easy enought to find silver just edge searchin, dont mark every coin thats not silver, some people roll hunt to find error coins, or people just starting out trying to fill a book, if you must mark the coins choose one year and make that year the bi centennial  |

I agree with Jason, except the part about marking bicentennials.  This is something that really bothers me when I see it.  |

The last bag I searched it seemed that every coin that had natural looking toning to it had been marked with a red perm marker. Many of these were 71-79's in AU or better condition except for the marker. One coin even had "toned" written on it, right across the face. Very annoying, because it was a very nice 78D, which could have filled a slot as an upgrade. The person also marked the face (ear) of every 1982, and about 15 BU 1995's.
I think I see 71, 72 and 76's as about 50% of the total coins in a bag. I suppose I could do a count sometime.

I agree that there is no need to mark searched coins. I put my identifying marks on the roll wrappers for the rolls I have searched.

I would agree with the marking of coins, chaps my hide honestly. If a person HAS to mark coins, take a small sticker, something the could be removed if a person really wanted to, and mark them that way. And dont do it to all of them, pick a year or two and stick with that. I search 3 boxes a week and have thought (most recently when being skunked) if by chance I have gotten my coin back. I dump where I get the coin but I know for a fact they bag and sell back to the Fed. |

I must confess I have been marking coins from my last box to see if I get any back. I only mark bad coins though and it's in the name of more silver.

what if you run a marker along the reeded edge? that still bad?

my last box had about a hundred coins with marks down the side of the coin, 2 or 3 in a roll it was very annoying. I dont know if it matters for grade though put it in a 2x2 and you cant tell |

I dont agree with marking coins any of them, but if you must I would like you to mark the bicentennials because I seem to get alot of them. I just mark the wrappers, which I know is no good because they send the coins back to brinks and I prolly reget them but I still seem to find silver so its ago |

I really implore all coin hunters to not mark coins. A coin may be common today, but in 200 years that VF 1979 D Lincoln will be a 231 year old coin! Today will be the history of the future, so please don't cause needless destruction.
