Spjegues, look at you, you open a box and you see that staring up at you and yet you have the presence of mind before you just go jumping right in to recognize you must first take pause and document that historic moment! That sounds like something I'd do, for sure! Hey, great box!

Spjegues,Congratulations! Wow, wonderful find! Rejuvenates our hope and spirit! Yes, yes there is still the silver out there of which we so fervently seek! Just when we were in the doldrums, you come along and remind us that we too can be lucky if we persevere....remember, all we pay is some time (and gas, lol).
Great find!

Grrr. After everyting I went through yesterday to line up an order for a box, I got a call late yesterday from the branch manager saying they don't order half dollars anymore. They stopped doing it a couple of months ago. I guess the word never got to the teller.

So I made several calls this morning and found a branch that would and I am supposed to get a confirmation call tomorrow. So, I guess my roll searching will be put off a few more days. I'm wondering if I'll even have them in time for this weekend.

Anyway, in the mean time, I've compiled a short list to keep an eye out for:

Obviously anything pre-71 for 40 and 90%'ers.
1970D
1972P DDO
1974D DDO
1982, '83 and '90 No FG (even though I still don't get the fascination)
Any S mm's

Is there anything else I should watch for?

I notice people mention the NIFC's. Anything special about those that I need to know about, other than NIFC?

Based on the stats I've seen 1987's are kinda tough to pull. I'm gonna keep any NIFC's I find in BU shape. They are cheap now but the speculators feel they have room to grow.

Spjegues, Congrats! Thanks for posting that because I was just about ready to pull the plug and walk away for a bit, you re-energized me!

So DylansDad and I were road tripping, a long road trip from northwest Iowa to Fort Worth Texas for the nascar race armed with approximately $1500 in cash for halves. Hit different small towns along the way buying what they had. Biggest pull came from $88 loose which we took 2 90% and 9 40%ers.

In our "spare time" we whipped thru 4 boxes of nickels as well. All and all a great time with friend of 30+ years.

thanks to spjegues I broke down and ordered 4 boxes.....but they won't be in for 2-3 weeks. I decided to expand my dumping to a second place, which is the CU that the lady dragged her feet and told me she would order them twice but never did.

I almost (yes, almost) told her to order 10 boxes, but once my wife found out they would probably find my body next to hoffas.

payback is a $%^&*

Thanks for all the kind comments. To answer some questions I am in the mountain west region of the United States.
The box was not all old. I found some 2001 etc in there. So it was not just sitting on shelf somewhere.

I am picking up another box tomorrow I will let you know if my luck continues.

The box did not have a stamped date. Most that I get say Dec 2012.

I will get some more pictures taken this weekend and post them.
Thanks again. I am glad that some of you are getting back into looking as many of you inspired me to start looking in the first place.

For those of you who may just be joining us and wondering how it's supposed to be done, read the foregoing comments, as that's probably as good an example of it as they come.

I remember the newbie a short while back here who said he searched like 25 boxes a minute. Well, that may be a little bit of an exaggeration, but he evidently worked for one of the loan-sharks, and, as such, had relatively easy access. Anyway, I didn't think he'd last here for very long.

When it's all dollars and cents to you, that's when you missed the boat, IMHO. Loosen up. Get out there and have some fun. Learn to laugh at Fortune when She frowns on you, and marvel at Her when She smiles on you.

And, never forget...show us pics when the latter happens...that's one of the reasons we're here!

Good luck Eaglefoot.

Picked up $10.50 in loose..........got ONE 40%er (1965).

I'm still avoiding bags/boxes.....but seeing that huge haul made me drool.
