Halfcrazy, I found a local bank that rolls their own halves. This has turned out to be the best bank for finding good stuff in half dollars. You're right, they roll them and just stick them in the vault until someone like us comes in to request them.

The teller I always deal with at that bank did say something about sending them back to the reserve (if I recall correctly) bank if they started getting too many of them. She said they get them in quite often from customers. This is the type of bank to look for.

I've learned a bit about how "good stuff" ends up back in circulation. A couple of scenerios go something like this:

1) Someone gets low on cash (or wants to use it on a given holiday) and rolls up everything they've been hoarding in that 5 gal carbouy (water cooler jug) over the past 20 years.

2) Someone older or someone who doesn't know (or care) about the possibility of some valuable coins being in the bunch of coins they bring in.

3) Some unscrupulous person steals a coin hoard from someone else and just wants to dump them for cash asap. This often turns out to be a relative stealing from another family member. Such as a grandkid stealing from a grandparent - happens all too often.

Just to name a couple of possible scenerios.

My sister, who also collects coins, used to work at a local truckstop. One night an individual came in who was obviously wacked out on meth. This person proceeded to purchase more than $50 worth of stuff with all silver dollars and halves (Morgans, Peace dollars, Franklin halves, Walkers, etc.). It was later learned that he had stloen them from his grandmother. What a loser for doing that to his own granny!

I relate that story just to illustrate another way that silver & other great finds get returned to circulation.
