How can anyone have $20,000 to spend on rolls of coins? If I had that I could pay off nearly 1/3 of my mortgage.
Anyway, I went to the bank today to deposit my wife's paycheck and saw a silver half in the teller's tray. Of course, I had no cash or change on my and I was in a hurry to get home. I carpool to work, so my ride was the one who took me to the bank in the first place, so when I got home, I grabbed some change and walked the mile or so back to the bank to get that half. I got in the bank, and luckily the teller I had deposited with earlier was still there. I went to her window and saw that the half was still there at the end of a long line of other halves. I gave her my slip from the coin counter machine and said "I'd like it in half dollars please." She proceeded to grab halves from the middle of the stack, avoiding the one on the end. I stopped her and said, "actually, there's one specific half in your stack I'd like, that one on the end." She then asked me "Why? Is it because it has nickel in it?" I told her "actually, it has silver in it." She then dropped it on the counter as if to see if it really was silver. It ended up being only 40%, a 1966, but I wasn't going to let a silver half slip away from me just because I didn't have 50 cents on me. It's also the first silver half I've got from circulation and that I paid face for.

Syaoran,
There is no reason to pay off a 3-5% mortgage. With inflation coming down the pipe, interest rates will skyrocket soon enough. So, would you rather pay off a 4% mortgage or make 10% on your cash?
Always keep money in your pocket...you never know when you'll need it. ;-)

I'd rather pay off the mortgage so I don't have to pay that bill every month anymore and could actually save some money. If I didn't have a mortgage payment, that's extra money that I would be able to keep from my paycheck rather than mailing it away to the mortgage lender. Also, I have a fixed rate mortgage, so I'll always pay the same interest regardless of inflation.

Russ: I look at it the same way. The mortgage we recently got is cheap money (4.4%). I have some $ not invested as of now and have no problem buying silver at 1970's prices (40 or 90% coins I get in rolls). If the guy at the bank would get me 25k at a time I'd do it. Right now, he is ok with 10-16 boxes at a time. He my monday order got messed up and they sent quarters instead so I added it to my "standard" 2k wednesday order for tomorrow. I then added another 1k just because.
Who knows how long they will keep getting boxes for me so I get them while I can. I'm working toward getting a full box of 40%ers and the same with 90%ers. Might not get there but it is fun trying.
Be safe Patty

This is obviously not the forum to discuss finances. However, for simplicity purposes say you owe $100,000 on your house at 5% fixed. That means you pay $5,000 a year in interest. If you pay off the mortgage at 5% but can get 10% in your checking account, you are losing 5% interest, roughly. The wealthy always have mortgages...they make more money elsewhere.

Patty,
Don't know if I mentioned this in an earlier post, but the first time I went to the Chase bank across the street from my house I asked if they could order halves. The teller asked "how many are we talking." I said "I don't know, $10,000?" She about passed out. I get my first full box from them tomorrow...I hope it has silver. I HATE HATE HATE having an account with them. However, I did sign up for the $100 promotion. ;-)

If I pay directly towards the principal, I don't pay interest. Also, any amount I pay over my monthly mortgage payment goes directly towards my principal, no interest. So if I pay $20,000 on the principal, I'm paying no interest on that.

Syaoran you are correct. However, this is the issue. Say you are paying off a 5% loan. In a year or two interest rates might be 10%+. So, now the $20,000 you dumped into your house is earning 5% instead of sitting in your checking account making 10%.
Hopefully, you find enough silver halves in circulation to pay your house off! Good luck!

Not to drag this conversation on any longer or to detract from the topic of JFK halves, but here's how I look at it: If I pay off the $73,000 left on my house, my house is paid for and I'm done, I don't have to worry about it anymore, all I have left are taxes, insurance, and utilities. I'm not sure where you came up with the idea of earning 10%, because the idea of taking money that I have and giving it to someone else so that I no longer have it doesn't sound much like earning to me.

Hey guys, I have a question that some of you experts on here might be able to answer for me. I found a roll of 1966 Kennedy halves in that huge find I made last month. Now I'm no expert on grading, but these babies look like they came straight from the mint, so I definitely think they are BU. Anyways, with silver the way it is right now, would these be worth any premium over melt, or just the same as any other 40%er? And I don't know about some of you but man it's seems my good luck streak ran out a long time ago..a 40%er has been hard to come by these last few weeks! I haven't really been able to search much with finals coming up but dang it would be nice to end this dry spell!
