I'm still trying to put together a set and need a lot from the 60's, the 1970 P&D, 1985 P,1987 P&D, and from 2002 on with the exception of 2006D. Just out of curiosity, would anyone sell/trade their doubles to me for numismatic value?

I just wanted to jump in here and say, hi. New to the forum here but not new to hunting rolls. I've mainly been sorting pennies (hoarding some copper and hunting wheateis). I just recently starting hunting halves. I don't know why I haven't done this sooner..... It all started when I found a silver quarter in pocket change about 3 weeks ago and the silver bug bit me in the rear end. I have since put copper on hold and started hunting silver. I know many of you collect for numismatic value and others for silver/copper/nickel to each his own right? Well me personally I am over whelmed with all the varieties and errors. I would drive my self nuts looking for those so for now I will stick to converting junk money to something with a sustainable value. I will pull out obvious other finds as I go. Any way I didn't intend to hijack this thread so enough with the back story and on to some finds. After my .25 I found I jumped straight in head first. I ordered a box of halves and did pretty nice for my first ever box. I found 3 1964 and 7 40%. I was hooked even more like an addict on crack! I then ordered another and was SKUNKED. Then I picked up a box a quarters to search to make $1000 because I had previously searched one of those as well and come to find out my bank is real easy to dump at. They give me those clear plastic bags they use, all I have to do is put 1000 dollars worth in. Well when I went in to get the .25s I asked if they had any halves and the teller had 2.50 worth and there were 4 40% silvers. So they next day I proceeded to ride to every bank I could find and clean them out of halves. I found roughly 549.50 halves. ALL SKUNK I did come across a bank that had a random box in the vault. I thought it was a gold mine, small town, random full box just sitting in vault waiting to be found. Boy I was wrong. However I did pull 4 2008 halves out. Would love to trade a couple with someone because I know a lot of people collect NIFC halves. I have two boxes coming in tomorrow I will share the results.

The average value of a 2002-2011 P&D non-satin NIFC Kennedy is $1.67 in MS60 condition. In MS63 it is $2.70 The 87P = MS60 - $3, MS63 - $4.50 1987D = MS60 - $2.50, MS63 - $3.50

Ugh, newbie and I've been skunked for first like $750. Most it from boxes from Loomis. With silver recently hitting their highs, my gut tells me that they are extracting silver or perhaps there are more silver hunters hoarding. Either way, getting discouraged...ugh

Ricardocody, 8-10 boxes, even more, isn't unusual. Just stick with it and go at your own pace, whatever your situation permits. The hardest thing is always the dumping. In time you'll figure out the routine that works for you. There's no magic formula. Good luck!
Although thankfully I haven't yet been in a really bad encounter, I try to look at dumping as a chance to practice face to face communication and confrontation. Often when you're in an unpleasant situation its unexpected or you're nervous about the stakes. You know there is a possibility for attitude when dumping and if you're like most people in the US there are more than enough banks so the worst they can do if you don't cross the line is make you go to another branch. If things go smoothly good, if not well just think of it like an interactive game or school lesson.

Talked to my bank in my home town today, back from school, and she said these exact words. "Good luck getting anything from loomis, they take all old halves out of their machine wrapped rolls"
I still ordered 100 dollars worth just to check, guess we will see.

Well I got tired and fed up of such dismal results and figured I would do a " Do or Die" 2 day road trip. I pen it Wisconsin Death Trip :) Gassed up full: Cost $57 Time Spent roughly: 15 hours Miles Traveled total: 175 Total Amount Searched: $1750 Dimes. $3350 Halves. 3 Banks rescheduled my pickup for next week which total another $2500. Dumping was extremely tough and I had to use one location twice. However I did find a 3 Month AA Token in a self service coin counter. Heres what I got: 14 Roosevelt dimes, 1 Mercury dime (my first from CRH), 8 40% Kennedy, 1 90% Kennedy. 1 2004 NIFC that is almost proof like, 1 weird possibly PMD Dime, 3 Canadian Dimes, 2 5 Pence, 1 Mystery Half. Most interesting Half is a 1968 that is in almost BU condition that weighs in at 11.23g which is being posted in another topic. All in all it was ALOT of work for little gain. I'm not done by any means but this does look like things are really drying up here in WI and drying up faster every day. It wasnt totally terrible, some would say its a real good score. Lets be honest though, this was simply a little luck on my side to get what I did. Total Value was about $96. The only reason my numbers came up was on the last box of dimes I got 4, and my last box of halves gave me the 90% and 3 40%. I am glad I dont do this for profit because I would have quit already. I love the hunt and there is no better feeling than seeing that silver rim when you crack a fresh roll. EDIT: Forgot to mention, Everything was from Loomis/Garda except $100 in halves which were from Brinks. Enjoy the pics! Halves Dimes Foreign PMD dime? 2004 NIFC (Almost proof looking) AA 3 Month Token 1968 11.23g Half Mystery Half. Has a Hollow sound to it, and looks as if Copper has seeped out from the inside of it. (I know what happened to it, do you )

BuffaloBuffoon:
Thanks for posting your findings and giving me some glimmer of hope. I am a newbie so was hoping for some beginner's luck to no avail. I can't wait to find my 1st silver...this reminds me of opening up packs of baseball cards as a kid. I have yet had to dump but dreading it...

There is a Coinstar in the Walmart near me no charge. I don't know if all Walmarts have these but just a place that you could try.

Wow, Buff. Those coins (the dime and half) look like they went through a fire.
People get to thinking the coin rolling outfits pull out all the silver. It seems that way when there is little to be found.
I think what is really happening is the silver is getting pulled before it gets to the coin handling companies by tellers and other pickers. It's definitely drying up, but there will always be the occasional silver coin.
