Picked up about $20 in loose halves from teller trays and quickly scanned the edges: no silver. Later I looked them over for NIFC or other possible keepers and found something unusual. Here is the edge of one coin:

JFK-Half-Dollar-Roll-Hunters:-Silver,-Proofs-And-Other-Finds

Looked like all the other Cu-Ni clad pieces in the pile. When I checked the date I was quite surprised:

JFK-Half-Dollar-Roll-Hunters:-Silver,-Proofs-And-Other-Finds

JFK-Half-Dollar-Roll-Hunters:-Silver,-Proofs-And-Other-Finds

This is actually quite a nice-looking choice AU piece with classy natural toning. I've never before seen a 90% half with edge toning like this; really looked like a throwaway. It's a good thing that I don't just check edges!

Joabbler,

You sure that's not what remains of an old gold plating?

Pretty sure. The obverse and reverse toning looks natural. The edge color is coppery red, not the bright yellow of gold plate. If the coin had been plated I don't see how only the edges would have been affected.

My guess is the coin was rolled and stored in some environment that generated a reddish color on the silver edge. The obverse and reverse developed a more typical speckled tone. Anyway, I like it. I'm always happy to get a 90% half at face.

After hitting 4 banks today I ended up with 12 halves from teller trays. All 70's and all beat up. A little disappointing since I rarely get any from teller trays.

I'm on a 10 box skunk streak. In fact, I've never pulled a single silver out of a box. I've only been doing this for a few months. I'm about to search my first box since around the holidays. Wish me luck!

Keep at it ! I had 2 boxes last time that had no silver. Was encouraged by another CC forum member, and today I found my first Walker! Actually found a second in same box, a 1941d!

Maybe try some other banks.

Nice finds, especially on the Walker! I love to see those on the ends.

Went through 4 boxes: 3 were skunks and the last has 4 40% and 1 JFK 90%. Also pulled a 1987 P.

Happy hunting!
