I picked up a box of halves last week and finally set it up where they will order me a box a week until I ask them to stop. It was a String & Sons box but unfortunately, someone decided to dump their massive collection of bicentennial halves into a coin counter somewhere. I would estimate that about 70-75% of the box were bicentennials. I had a handful of rolls with 18 in it, and at least one roll with 19. It made quick work for sorting, but I wasn't able to find any silver, or anything else interesting for that matter.

Yes, bicentennials are all too common in the rolls. Also, if I had a dollar for every 1971 I have found I would have a small nest egg already (and I have only done four boxes).
All this being said, I really hate those 1979s. The 9 look too close to a 0.
Anyway, more later.

Well I went through 10 more boxes found 5,40% 2,1987 (24 found to date) I'm cutting to 8 boxes a week and hope I run into a monster dump some day. I just cannot quite  , I'm to addicted to roll searching. Good luck to all |

Today is the third day since I dropped off some gift cards to the two tellers that help me at the bank I go to every day on my lunch break. Today is the third day in a row that one of the tellers has saved the loose half dollars for me and today is the third day in a row that I have gotten silver from that bank. Picked up a $10 CWR of halves and scored a 1966 40% silver half. I also got a 1971 S silver Ike dollar. Edited by bbradford71

I spend $50 on the gift cards, they order me in boxes of nickels $100 each day, and they have saved all halves for three days. finds: 4 x 40% silver half dollars 1 x 90% silver half dollars 1 x Silver Ike dollar4 x $6.00 = $24 1 x $12.00 = $12 1 x $11.00 = $11 Total = $47.00 of silver found in three days This does not even take into consideration all of the silver War Nickels found from my boxes searched |

And that's just three days. I'm sure you'll make your money back when they save you more halves... or when an old person brings in a solid roll of silver and they save it for you. lol. looks like you are building a nice relationship!

Hello everyone. Congrats to all your recent finds.
Now, to clarify a few things and answer some questions. First, I am not a HE!....lol. Second, I am not picking all of the halves up on one trip nor on one day. I am picking up 3 boxes (5 boxes: if I get my rental payment on Tues 28th) at a time. Also, am splitting pickup into 2 days for the 57 boxes. My first 12 I will get March 1st. The other 57 are scheduled for the 6th and 7th. Third, it is not $10,000 in a day to red flag an account for the FEDS. According to the bank it is $10,000 in one transaction. My single transactions will not exceed $2500 at a time and thus be below their $10,000 threshold. Fourth, thankfully I have some help lined up both with carrying and lifting and sorting. Always good to delegate where possible.
Oh, and for those who thought I was a HE..lol no offense taken :) It's all good. No problem.

That is the point exactly. What I have found and this could just be in my area is that I am finding far more silver at banks in the ghetto than at banks in the nice area. I think a lot of it hast to do with people not knowing what they have and needing the money so they are depositing it at the bank. This in no way means that people in poorer areas are less educated, or don't know anything but that people are hard up for cash in this economy and they are just seeing half dollars as that a half dollar. I mapped out 10 banks that I plan to hit up tomorrow that are all in real ghetto areas to see if I score any silver. Edited by bbradford71

I promise you this....I owned a business that was cash heavy.....four $2500 transactions within the same day are viewed the same as one $10000 transaction. I promise you that if you hit that $10,000 mark in one day the branch manager will be asking you to fill out paperwork....it happened to me. The feds view splitting up cash transactions within one day to stay below that $10,000 to be evading the law and you can get charged just for that alone. It is actually against the law to split transactions up just for that purpose. Trust me when I say this.....STAY BELOW $10,000 in one day even if it is in multiple transactions. Take it from someone who has been there! Even if the manager is ignorant of the fact and doesn't make you fill out paperwork, if you ever get a tax audit....they will catch it and you will get fined.
Please understand I am not being critical, just trying to be helpful

Thank you very much unholyroller for your comments. On a side note: the reason for splitting up the transactions was actually ONLY because that is what I have to work with and then leveraging the bank's money to acquire the total amount of coins. I will have a withdrawal slip from my other bank to prove how much funds I started working with. They already said it would be ok to use more than one day in order to accomplish my coin sorting. They are aware that I am coin searching and due to previous work experience I am a known entity. My career as a Federal Employee already has my prints and data filed away. You are right however about not wanting or needing to bring any unecessary problems.
I opened my account with this particular bank with their understanding that I am an avid coin collector and wished to order bank boxes to search. They agreed in order to get my business.

StarLight, where do you deposit? Other banks that you don't pick up coins from? Like you have just a dumping bank or two? How many bank accounts do you have? lol

I got a call once asking why I was making so many large cash transactions and not using checks or cashier checks
instead of cash.
When I explained I was not withdrawing cash but it was boxes of coins I order to search, that settled the issue with them.
But yes they are watching!

OK, so this past week we did 6 boxes. From that we pulled 25 40% and 2 64s. We also pulled a butt load of BU 93s.
