SilverCoinPicker, I don't know if you saw my response to your last post. If not, go check it out. Congrats on the finds and good luck on the boxes.

Did my Tuesday box and found 2 40%ers and a 1987. I won't get my Thursday back because the Chase bank is moving locations this week. Will pick up my Thursday box this afternoon and report back later.

I just started hunting again this week. I only do it when it is too cold to be fishing. I did a little over 20 boxes last season and didn't find one 90% silver. My first box this season I find my first 90%er, a 64 Kennedy, this gives me a little more hope for hunting this season. I also picked up a nice 1967. I found three proofs, a 1997 that was DCAM and had a nice mirror finish and a 1972 and 1973 that were hard to tell that they were once proof coins. I also found a 1990 D that looked like it came from a mint set. Found like 7 others that were NIFC. So that was a great 2 boxes compared to last season.

Re: "String" Co rolls... I've searched over 40 boxes of String Co-rolled halves from 2 different area banks and I haven't found even one single silver half.

Does String run the coins they process through a coin metal composition-sorting machine like a Ryedale and pull out all the silvers or am I just the most wretchedly unlucky half hunter in recent history?

Is there such a thing as a ballpark average # of silver halves per box (or per 10 boxes) that should be hoped for over the long haul?

I'm getting pretty discouraged, burned out and turned off after searching 40,000+ clad halves and not finding even one silver for all that effort.

Congrats on your "First Finds" CrazyCat. That's a great haul SilverCoinPicker. I may have to try taking a road trip to the surrounding small towns?

Searched my 2 weekly boxes today. Found 1 1966, 3 1967, and 2 1968-D.

Went to a bank today and they said they had halves, but I would have to buy exactly $100 worth. Apparently they accumulate loose halves and seal them in bags of $100 and either send them back to the mother ship or (rarely) unload them on a customer. I've never encountered this situation before but I ponied up the $100 for the one bag they had available. The count was exactly correct and I scored 4 silver-clads plus 3 1964 coins. There was also a 2011-D coin but it was pretty thrashed so I threw it back.

I'll be checking back with them periodically and hopefully I'll pick up more bags whenever they are filled.

Figured I would try a different bank got two brinks boxes. The teller had $39.00 in loose halfs. Got 3 64's and 2 66's. also the loose halfs where all before 1979. Someone must have cleaned out there sock drawer. The brinks boxes where good 2-90% 2-40%. One thing that surprized me is that 60% of the halfs I searched had a blue marker line on the side. Anyone see this mark before. So far I have searched 50k plus in halfs.

49-90%
168-90%
15-proofs

I have been searching those same boxes lately. I didn't know they were Brinks. Thanks for the info. I have found more silver with them than the String & Son's wrapped rolls.

Silver Hunter, did you notice that some of the rolls are a coin short while some have an extra coin? The boxes almost always come out to $500. Once in a while I will be short 1 coin. This week I had 2 coins extra. It seems to all work out in the long run.

4 box total yesterday: 5

All 40%.

Cut my box orders from 8 to 4 per week.

It was getting too expensive being charged $6.00 per box from one of the banks that I was ordering from and not finding enough to even break even for the purchases.

Now it will also be less of a burden dumping.

TNW,
Good luck hunting to all!

Murphy,
The boxes came out $1 short.
When I dump my coins some banks have shorted me $1-$3.
Then a few times I get $1-$3 more. I have received $8,$14,$22 extra a few
times not sure if I miss counted or if the banks machines where off.
Overall I feel ahead.

Silver Hunter, I have never been off by more than $2 in my normal $1000 order. I think I'm about even for all the boxes I have gone through. I decided long ago not to mention it to the bank manager. My reasoning for this is, the bank may decide to stop ordering boxes if I were to complain. I don't mean to punish me, I mean rather than have a unhappy customer they could choose not to make coins available to non-business accounts. Fortunately for me, this is my company bank. But why ruin it for anyone else who orders halves that may not have a business account.

I was getting customer wrapped nickels from another bank and the rolls were always short. Sometimes there would be 5 or 6 rolls that would be short 3 to 4 nickels each. Rather than complain, I decides not to get my rolls from them. My Credit Union quit allowing it's members to buy the coin bags from their coin machine because some of the members complained about the count being short.
