Every bank has it's own policy on employees buying coins out of the tray, even from branch-to-branch. They usually get first dibs, glad my wife is a teller/loan officer, as the other gals don't care about collectible coin, although one nabbed about 20 silver dollars when I first started roll hunting. I wasn't happy, but too bad for me.

In my opinion a teller should buy a silver from the tray of they want it. They have just as much right to it as we do. But if they leave it there and we ask for it, they should give it up because they should have taken before we asked.

I'm 32 and have been searching boxes coins for about 10 years now. I was a commercial teller at a major bank for my last year in college. Because of guys like myself and the rest of us, I knew whatever was in my coin tray was fair game to customers. So, to avoid this, I would keep all of what I found throughout the day in an envelope in my cash drawer, out of the sight of any customer. I would just buy it at the end of the day/week.

I have also encountered tellers keeping silver in the coin trays that would not sell to me while visiting various banks. While not making a big issue of it, I always tell them to hide it because the next person may not be as nice as I am about not selling to me. Funny thing is that a few times when I have done this tellers say 'thanks for the heads up' and then they sell me a few of the pieces they have. Most of the time though, I have found tellers to be helpful and even interested in the hobby we love. I have various tellers that save odd coins for me or call occasionally to tell me they have something I may be interested in. If I notice a poor attitude or rudeness, I simply turn that branch into a dump site.

To put this into perspective, I have searched over $420,000 in halves in the last three years alone and try to specifically dump at one bank because numerous branches have told me they would not order boxes for me. While this is not nearly as much as some of the higher volume searchers here, it it still a significant amount of coin.

All in all, in my opinion, you reap greater rewards when you are friendly and patient than when pushy and demanding. Believe me, I have been both at times and find tellers to save more oddities for you when you are nice.

Sorry to ramble on...just a few thoughts

I learned quite early that it is more for the hobby aspect than the monetary gain. If I did it on a cost analysis basis, I would have given up a long time ago. The only reasons I have not been searching boxes is that the bank which once ordered them stopped and I was getting a lot of negative looks from my CU when dumping.

This being said, if PNC orders I will again spread out the dumps with my previous bank which once ordered them being one client. I am not doing this out of revenge but more out of necesssity. I may open a TD account as well and use it specifically for dumping.
