JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

shoot, you guys are hitting some good numbers and the bank forgot to order my 4 boxes yet again today......................

While at my preferred PNC Bank today, I finally asked the head teller if she would consider ordering me some half dollars. She told me the minimum she could order would be $1000 and I told her that would be okay.

She told me she would order some and that they would be here next Wednesday around noon. I told her that would be okay with me, and I told her I would call ahead of time. I also promise not to bring them back to her branch. She smiled and said it would be okay if I did, but I plan on obeying the cardinal rule. You never dump at the bank You pick up your half dollars from.

To say the least, I am looking forward to being able to do half dollars again. It really is a hobby I love and I truly miss it.

Another skunk box for me tonight but I did find a 1876 penning about the size of a dime you never know what you are going to find. I tried switching it up for next week and ordered two boxes from an out of town bank.

How do you tell a clad proof...does it have a "S" mint mark?

How is the edge different? It's obviously not silver so what is the indication that it's a proof?

Except for the 1964 first-year Philadelphia proofs, all proof Kennedys have the S mintmark.

The 1968-1970 proofs were 40% silver ("silver-clad").
The 1971-1974 proofs were all copper-nickel clad.
There were no 1975-dated Kennedy halves.

The 1776-1976 proofs were struck in both 40% silver-clad and copper-nickel clad composition. These are best distinguished by looking at the edge; the copper core should be very obvious on the copper-nickel pieces. You can't tell by weight since there is a lot of overlap in the acceptable weight range for the two types.

The 1977-1991 proofs were all copper-nickel.

Proofs dated 1992 and later were struck in both copper-nickel and 90% silver. Besides the edge appearance difference, you can positively identify these by weight. The copper-nickel pieces weigh about 11.1 grams while the silver pieces weigh about 12.5 grams.

Yeah OO, I upped my orders a little over the last few monthes. Thinking about trying to do a 60 box week once to see what I can get, just the cordination and effort to put it together, dont know. If I was you I would be trying to snag more of those bags if you can every week.

I added 6 boxes last week, but my teller called me, and not getting them tommorrow, so only 14 this week. Iv been through 10 so far, they started out good, first 6 gave up (10) 40%, (1) ken (1) walker, (11) proofs, todays 4 boxes only (1) 40%. . 4 tommorrow. Should have 22 boxes next week.
