What is everyones rate when they search through penny rolls?
I've searched about 50 lbs so far. 15 pounds are pre 1982 so about 30% copper and 51 Wheaties so far.
How is everyone else doing? What is your rate of copper and Wheaties?

I can't help but wonder how many copper cents are in this hoard of 100 million cents that are in Rockefeller Center https://goccf.com/t/22716

Since this 100 million cents is in NY, and there was a story maybe two years ago (?) about a collector releasing a 1909S VDB into circulation in the NYC area, I'm willing to bet the 09S VDB is in that 100 million hoard. I sure would like to search for it, but how long do you think it would take to search through 100 million cents?

How long to search 100 million cents? Okay, I was bored, so... If you looked at each coin for ten seconds for eight hours a day for 365 days a year, it would take just over 95 years to search them all. Steve

so 95 collectors could do it in a year ,,and 190 in 6 months ,, Not so bad as long as I get to be one of them !

Yeppers!
You KNOW there's gotta be some good stuff in there.
I based the 95 years on realistic search methods...in ten seconds you can determine the date and mint mark, general condition, and make a decision to set it aside for closer examination later.
Continuous searching for longer than about eight hours, and your eyes and concentration are gonna be fatigued enough that you will start making significant mistakes.

I've searched about 15,000 pennies so far. About 40 wheaties, oldest being 1926. Are you keeping pre 82's? If so, just for the copper?

Well then I guess 51 wheats at 9,000 is good so far(2 1919 and 1 1929). Yes is keeping pre 82. I do not know why, mostly for the copper I guess but it seems like a lot of darn work to double your money..if that.
I also found a few beautifully toned pennies. A bright red 1968 with some orangeish and a huge green kind of tone. It's really an eye catcher. I would post a picture but I do not know how when I edit/copy that does not work so..but thanks ceaton for giving me some numbers to compare

What I am really trying to do is get the highest rate of return on my coins.
I think what I am going to do is sort out the copper I have found already into each year and mintmark piles. This way I can make rolls or sets with the coins I have and try to get some type of higher premium than the 2(would use cents sign but apparently they don't have it on keyboards anymore) cents in copper.
Any other suggestions?

I search about 25 to 125 worth each week on cents. I pull all 59 thru 81 cents to be saved as copper bullion when us mint gets rid the ban on melting them. This year I went thru 800 to 1200 dollars on pennys . This what I found . 1. I am geting about 5 dollars per box on 59 thru 81 coppers. 2. On wheats I not finding that many. It ranges from 3 coins to 10 coins per box. Two good ones this year was 1919 d, 1927. Rest were 40 and 50 common date junk. 3. 2 unplated 83 thru 2007 zincs . Maybe serval strange toned coins that bright are bright red or strange colloring on them. 4. Only two indian pennys this year. 1890, 1907 coins. I thought it was amazing they spent them. 5. Maybe less than roll of dimes in plastic coated coins not fed paper wraped coins. 6. I found over 2 rolls of canada coins in soulth texas boxs. Serval other from other places. They look like cents but they are from us goverment boxs. 7. Out all my boxs I ever bought this year. I found one box of all bu 2007 denver pennys. They are super rare to get an intire box full brand new coins. It was june or july of 2007 on that box. Its still unopened 8. I can build solid date rolls of bu/au 2000 and up coins no problem. 9. Very few 1968 thru 1974 s mints. 1972 and 1968 are the worst to try to find. The rest are easy. Most are brown junk coins. I need to check all 1970 for small dates . 10. I am building 13 sets on 1941 thru 2007 sets. They all complete minus 1982 small dates, 1968, 1972 s mints. I am having an tough time finding 82 small dates. I saved over 13 dollars on 82 coins. I get maybe 50 to 100 coins per box but they are all large dates. Very few small dates are being found. Maybe 1 or 2 coins per box on small dates.
Its looks like I need to cash my coins in to buy more boxs to search to finish my sets I am building. I lost track big time on how many coins I searched this year. Maybe 10000 to 15000 dollars worth of nickels, pennys, Halfs, Quarters, dimes, dollar coins this year. I need to finish my sets and take an long break from roll searching. But I cant stop intill my sets are done. I guess someday I will stop buying so many coin boxs to search. I am sick of it big time. I spend maybe 3 hours each day doing this.

Using the ryedale coin sorter it would take 139 days. That is if there are no jam ups and you can go 24 hours a day. It sorts copper cents from zinc cents at about 500 per minute. I got one about 2 months ago and have already gone through 128,500 cents. My average is about 18% copper. Oldest copper found in a penny roll is an 1833 1/8th Real form Jalisco Mexico. It is slightly bigger than a cent and jammed the machine, lucky me! As far as how many are copper? I would guess about 25% I am on the West Coast and it seems about 18% is the average and East Coast is a bit higher, around 25%
