I am not sure about this. Could it be split plating (but I do not see any split). Could it be MD (but there is no shelf).

That is Die Deterioration. It will show on the right side of the date and the left side of LIBERTY and the tops of the motto.

Does the die surface "flow" away from the device taking part of the depressed area on the die with it?

Yes the die is erroding from use. Your coin is in the LDS/VLDS range. The single squeeze cents do this a lot more that the multi-hubbed dies of the past. You can see the die flow around the date area on the left side you your coin.
