The head curator from the Bank of Canada Currency Museum brought some goodies to my lab at work today to be tested with the XRF. Among many rare bread tokens and proof colonial tokens, was the 1911 Canada silver dollar trial specimen struck in lead. Not many can say they actually held this piece in their hands, and I was very grateful to have done so... this was the best photo I could manage, with my iPhone. In hindsight, I should have snapped a photo with me holding it... Congrats SPP That's a real piece of Canadian Numismatic history. Is it true that only two exist, that one is in a private collection?

Only one lead pattern piece is known to exist... and yes, the composition will be revealed in a future CN Journal article.

Didn't they do three . SPP-Ottawa, you should have cleaned it to make it look nicer. Also now you got a new numismatic claim to fame. Anyway which other goodies did he have That is pretty interesting!

Yes, three in total. Two in silver, one in lead.

I remember reading that a very long time ago the museum had glued some of their coins down in some kind of display and that the coins were damaged by this. I'm just curious if this coin was one of them. Do you have a picture of the obverse?

I didn't photograph the obverse, but it was perfectly fine...

If there was ever a time for a "candid selfie" with that chunk of lead...this would have been the right time for it... Will enjoy your article in the near future..

You should have melted it down and cast it with a spon for a fishing sinker. I used to do that as a kid with lead tire weights for catfishing in the Mississippi .. but I guess that the BoC may have had a problem with that. Anyway, congrats and it couldn't happen to a nicer fellow. See you in May.
