Several weeks ago I posted about my first non-paying buyer in five years of selling.

This past week it looks like I may have two more. One, in Japan, with a 10 feedback (but has purchased coins from David Lawrence!) bought a $200 German coin and I haven't heard from him since. I've contacted ebay to send a non-payment reminder.

I've got another buyer with nearly 600 feedbacks who bought a U.S. coin for $45. four days ago and I haven't heard from him either.

The second buyer may well pay, but my question is, how long do I have to wait before canceling the transaction with the buyer in Japan and relist the German coin?

I wait 30 days before opening a case...

That being said, I end up with 10-15 non-payers per 3 month period, it is most frustrating when it done with high value items...

30 days is generous. Kudos to jdmern for being patient. If that's too long for you, contact ebay, they will tell you what they suggest as a reasonable amount of time.

I agree 30 days is generous. But 4 days is way too impatient. I wait 3 days and the send a payment reminder, send another reminder at 7 days and then open a case after 10 days (unless I have some indication from the buyer that there is a reason for late payment).

You must wait a minimum of 4 days before you can cancel a sale for non-payment. When you request the order cancellation for non-payment, ebay then notifies the buyer and he has 7 days to react to the cancellation. At this point he either pays for the item, agrees to the cancellation, or he never responds. If he never responded then after 7 days ebay will send you a notice confirming the order cancellation and will reverse the final value fees to you. The item you sold is basically tied up for 11 days before you can resell it if it takes the max. time to resolve.

I have my account set up for ebay to open a non-paying bidder case in 4 days. I think that's plenty of time when you consider they get 7 more days to respond. ebay handles the heavy lifting & I don't have to worry about it.

Thank you for all the helpful responses. I guess I have a few more days to wait.

I have an NPB claim going right now. Auction ended Sunday, I invoiced the buyer immediately and then contacted them again Tuesday. No response. Thursday Noon I filed the NPB claim (he's in my time zone), and on Monday when the response time runs out I'm nuking him.

ebay holds sellers to normal retailing rules regarding returns. I'm OK with that. How long do you get to wait to pay when you buy something from Amazon?

The U.S. buyer finally paid today, five days after winning the coin and ebay allowed me to cancel the purchase by the Japanese buyer for the German coin and I will be getting my final fees back. The coin has been relisted.

I've blocked the Japanese bidder.

I do the same. It's all automated so I don't worry about it. The few times it's kicked in I've always received my payment within a day or two of ebay sending out their late pay notification. Perhaps buyers respond to getting that notification from ebay more than they do getting it from the seller, dunno.

I was less lucky. The buyer - who had bought and paid for something since my auction - never replied. I'm all good with ebay, and now his name is listed in this Forum. Oh, well.
