I think it matches up with some of the markers. It is just Sooooo worn down. My dad gave it to me for my Dansco 7070 along with an 1851 silver 3 cent piece I think someone used as a bb target. I really hope this is a small.

I'd love to see the 1851 3cent with a bb gun bullet mark. That would be an incredibly accurate shot unless you were under a foot away from it.

The Small Motto determination is dependent on the motto...or so I thought. According to "Pennyguy" at NumisSociety, there are several pick-up points other than the motto;

Key differences include:
The tips of the banner show clear differences.
Two berries show on the lower left set of leaves on a genuine small motto.
The large motto piece only will show one.
The feathers on the lower end of the arrows should be checked as well. The large motto piece will display three feathers on the outside of the arrow and four on the inside. Genuine small motto coins will show three feathers on the outside and five on the inside of the left arrow. The right arrow should show four on the outside and five on the inside.

I stopped looking at yours when I saw the banner ends...Small Motto, it appears to be.

I have been wrong before.

The 1864 Small Motto has a killer pickup just like the 1916 SLQ, visible into near-basal state, and here it is.

Small Motto, right banner tips end at the same horizontal level:

1864-2-Cent-Small-Motto?

Large Motto banner tips end on an angle:

1864-2-Cent-Small-Motto?

Yours is a Large Motto.

Another PUP on the Small Motto is the "T" in "TRUST" is tucked up higher against the ribbon. PCGS Coinfacts is a great reference also. PG

This one has a few good pickups. I try to find the ones that make people scratch their heads at how I attribute them.

This OP coin as a Small Motto is still $100+. It can be worth your while to be able to identify the basal ones, and a basal attribute is a snap decision in higher grade. When you can see it at a glance, you can bargain from strength.

It is a large motto. My favorite PUP is the outer leaf below GOD. On the large motto it is thin and follows the contour of the leaf below it. On the small motto it is larger, bulbous and comes much closer to the ribbon above it. If you can see any of the motto above it, on the large motto the leaf point is to the right of the N. On the small motto it is left of the center of the N.

Not hijacking the thread. I am just confused since what I have determined is a small motto matches some of the markers listed above but not others.

Jeffrose, aside the fact that the D on yours is visible and diagnostic, I don't really see any of the other pickups arguing against yours being a Small Motto. The leaf Conder mentioned is clearly in the right spot, as are the banner tips I mentioned. All the other little stuff is subject to wear and strike artifacting. You got the main stuff right, so this is a good one to avoid overthinking.
